Well so is SWEET CHARITY and so is WEST SIDE STORY as well as HAIR as well as many other shows. They are period pieces. There is nothing wrong with that. Not everything has to be set in the present day.

There is a difference between dated and period specific.

By your statement Roxy you're also saying that Streetcar Named Desire or Importance of Being Earnest are dated because they don't take place today.

I don't go to the theatre to see everything set in 2009. Many of us like to travel to times we weren't aive during.

"Period specific"?

I thought we were talking about the revival of PROMISES, PROMISES not the revival of CARRIE!

And the score is actually not that fabulous, don't get me wrong it's good and fine, and I adore Bacharach/David's other work. The orchestrations are what make it work, really. The book is the worst of all the elements and without a VERY strong director AND a VERY strong choreographer it may come off as trite, dated and give off the dreaded vibe of been-there-done-that. AND I don't think Simon has it in him to make the appropriate changes to the book so it won't be the 100% sexist nonsense that it is.

I say stick the songs in the far superior Wilder movie script and just do a movie musical remake of THE APARTMENT.

Late to the party here, but I'm definitely turned off by the casting. Why why why couldn't they get Norbert Leo Butz for the lead?

But who knows? Maybe Hayes and Cheno will surprise and show us something deeper than their respective dog and pony shows. Its in Rob Ashford's hands now.

It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

Know I'm swinging off the topic here, but any mention of Little Me always invokes a comment from me. I think Chenowith would be WONDERFUL as Belle and Hayes has the potential for the male leads. Except for Martin Short, I didn't much care for the Roundabout revival and did not like Faith Prince at all. If they're going to use that version, however, I think Chenowith would be perfect in playing both the Old and the Young Belle. I saw the original production three times, the miserable '82 revival with James Coco and the Roundabout. I'm not the superfan of Chenowith for the ages, but THIS, I think, she could pull off to a tee. Much more so than Promises, anyway. IMO.

I just don't see what the big fuss is all about. I saw the OBC of PROMISES, PROMISES and was just bored throughout the evening. The "new" type of sound of the score turned me off. The only good songs are the title number and "I'll Never Fall in Love Again". Put me in the same boat with SueleenGay and Ed Mottershead. PROMISES,PROMISES is a snooze fest. Sorry, Michael Bennett.

The very thought that they'd even try, or should try, to update this is beyond ridiculous. The very appeal of Bacharach/David is in that late 60s sound, and NOTHING about the score, plot or characters would work outside of its time frame.

Pgenre I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the merits of the piece. I think it's probably Simon's best musical libretto (though I feel his musical librettos are all a bit of a mixed bag so that may not be saying all that much) and I do think the score is largely top tier Bacharach/David. Some lesser known gems (Knowing When to Leave, Wanting Things, Whoever You Are I Love You) among the bigger hits--and I like to think of myself as a Bacharach/David geek--I have about 30+ records and CDs trying to get everything from Bacharach's late 50s to mid 70s period. (I initially thought the score was a bit disappointing, and they have done some even better work elsewhere, but...)

You are right though that the Tunick orchestrations are beyond reproach (with Bacharach and PhilRamone they found a way to perfectly recreate his studio sound in a theatre). It's too bad we'll lose (I've no doubt) the pit singers, but...

Speaking of, does anyone have ANY photos of the original production that show Wagner's set that Bennett loved so much? I've never gotten a sense of it before.

Just get Cheno back on Broadway. That is the only reason I want to see this.
I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&. "Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."

Their only other options are The St. James, Neil Simon & Golden. The Golden(804), St. James(1,620) & Neil Simon(1,445) are still smaller than the Broadway(1,700+) so any move would be good. Maybe they're looking at the Neil Simon now. Still too big for this show, but it's better than The Broadway Theater.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

In their current configurations, the Broadway has 1,733 seats to the St. James' 1701 seats. The Broadway has a single balcony, while the St. James has an unfashionable two balconies. Now, the St. James has that groovy West 44th Street location, but the two theatres really do not differ by that much in seating, so I wouldn't really understand what the point would be. I'd even just stay at the Broadway to avoid having to sell a second balcony.

I'm not sure how a move to the Neil Simon would work, since Promises has been on sale for several weeks in a TeleCharge house and the Neil Simon is TicketMaster.

The Golden is not an option unless they are doing Promises with a cast of seven and an orchestra consisting of a kazoo, windchime and slide whistle.
Begin at the beginning and go on till you come to the end: then stop.
