re: PROMISES, PROMISES Starring Hayes and Chenoweth to Play Broadway Theatr

Does anyone think that Bacharach and David could write a new song for Cheno? She needs a really big number before Chuck's PROMISEs, PROMISES, or they could just give her that song.
Or they could throw in one of their other greats like,
ANYONE WHO EVER HAD A HEART.
Or they could bring in Elvis Costello.

It was 40 years ago, but what I remember most about the original was that the sound was unique and it was a Bennett musical so it just danced and danced. The applause would just break out in the middle of a dance.

What excites me most about this (besides the casting of Kristin Chenoweth, who I think will do wonders with the score. Her Knowing When To Leave is going to rock) is the timing. Since I don't live in New York, I only get to come out for planned trips. So the fact that (fingers crossed that they don't change) this will be playing at the same time as Sondheim on Sondheim and Anyone Can Whistle just has me doing flips.

Am I really the only one who thinks this show sucks? Have any of you seen it recently? I have a feeling the closest most people on this board have ever come to this show is "Camp".

They should have stuck with their guts and named this show "Turkey!"

While we’re playing with stereotypes:

1) anxious to hear if Kristin will sing the song "I'll Never Fall in Love Again"

2) I've heard Dionne Warwick's version many times

3) and I LOVE theatre (all caps - we will excuse the spelling error).

I'll wait to pass judgment until I see it for myself. I think Chenoweth could work if directed correctly. I don't think she's the one trick pony some see her as. She is indeed too old for the role, but, she is an actress and I'm willing to keep an open mind until I see her. I agree with the poster in another thread who suggested Hayes and Chenoweth for Little Me. Still, Hayes has been with the production in reading for a while, so, he must be doing something right.

I know its slightly cliched but it was Kristin Chenoweth, Idina Menzel and Wicked who got me into the whole broadway scene?... I have seen Wicked and Idina in concert and I am absolutely thrilled Kristin is coming back to the Great White Way.

I am even more thrilled that I have actually been planning a trip to NY to arrive on April 25 and to be there for my 21st birthday and what a great present it will be to see her up there on the stage.

Oh and I have been listening to the cast recording and I can already picture and hear Kristin singing You'll think of me and I think that song is right up her alley! "Knowing when to Leave" is a little more belty and after watching her growl out her belts on Glee, it might be a bit of a stretch for her to sing haha but I think she is going to rock it!

Overall I am just thrilled Kristin is back where she belongs!

When we're basing our opinions on the vocal abilities of live performers from a cheesy television show, with digitally-manipulated recordings, it means the world really has gone into a sh*t hole!!!

I have HUGE crushes on famous females like Megan Fox, Jennifer Garner, Eden Espinosa, Melissa Rycroft, Emma Watson, Taylor Swift, and Julianne Hough.

I am more than excited about this and our next trip to NYC will be planned around this show.

People have been expressing concern about the theatre being too big, but is the Broadway really that much bigger than the Shubert? I saw the original production at the Shubert and thought that the theatre was the perfect size. The original production was actually quite large, from what I can remember.

Yes! Almost by 500 seats. That's a huge difference.

I wonder if Phyllis and Sueleen saw the same production I did. It definitely made me want to stay away from any production of the show other than a full-scale Broadway revival. Yikes. Luckily, I usually just forget that I ever saw it.

I'm dreading seeing a non Bennett "Turkey Lurkey Time" almost as much as I was dreading seeing Wayne C's take on Fosse's iconic "Rich Man's Frug". re: PROMISES, PROMISES Starring Hayes and Chenoweth to Play Broadway Theatr

(Of course apparantly with the original production Bennett's main ture brilliant contribution was how he used his dancers to move the sets on and off, all choreographed, or to show the busy city in the Grapes of Roth and other numbers)

I do worry that it's a show, like Sweet Charity, that a revival might have trouble getting the right tone for. It's uber 60s. But I don't think it can be staged as a cartoon...

Bacharach/David did add a so so new song to a production 10or so years back--and there are some other songs they could draw from--some decent cut ballads, and one pretty song written for the never made 70s movie version

It's like Glee. People keep watching it just to bash it.

Why torture yourself?

You don't see me revisiting Lion King or Phantom over and over just to continually bitch about how much I hate them.

I love this show.

Eric, I think this show is in more capable hands that the Charity revival. A 4 year old could have set a better tone than Bobbie and Cilento who set no tone at all.

Ashford is hit or miss. Hopefully this will be a hit. I just worry that his stars are hopelessly miscast.

I'm for a Little Me revival with Cheno and Hayes, too. I didn't care for Short or Prince in the last one.

re: PROMISES, PROMISES Starring Hayes and Chenoweth to Play Broadway Theatr

I love PJ's Little Me idea as well--I do think Ashford is a good choice. But like you say, I'm pretty concerned about the casting (one thing I haven't seen mentioned here but isn't Cheno too old? Wouldn't her age make her more right for Marge MacDougall, a character who's meant to kinda represent what COULD become of Fran in a few years??

Any word on who else is joining the cast?
I think Chenoweth is miscast, but I'm definitely excited for the production and I'm really looking forward to it.
