On that note, I wonder if they're considering asking him back when Patrick Page leaves. I wouldn't be mad, I thought he did a great job.

Love Patrick, but this is a musical and it was refreshing to have a Hades who can actually sing.
Would be interesting to see a rock tenor play the role. Or someone who isn't male.

Patrick Page hands down.
No chemistry between Amber and Hewitt and he is stiff, not to mention his voice lost bass in one song for seconds.
Patrick's Nov return can't come fast enough.
Can we not do this "Vs" s**t? Can we just not?

Exactly. I am a huge fan of Patrick, have been since the first time I heard his voice on the cast recording over 2 years ago. His performance was one of the aspects of the show I was looking forward to seeing the most. My family had tickets to Hadestown for the end of March 2020 which obviously didn’t happen. Now we’re going the 25th of this month. When I learned that Patrick is still gonna be out then, was I bummed? Yes, for sure. (Especially considering I don’t see shows on Broadway very often). But am I also really excited to see Tom’s performance and a new take on the role? Absolutely yes! Broadway performers leave their roles either permanently or temporarily all the time and while yes it can be disappointing it also gives a great opportunity to someone new!
Regarding vocal range, Patrick’s is much more the exception than the rule. I don’t do theatre onstage, but I do choir and have for many years, so I do have some knowledge of vocal ranges and I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone sing (or speak) as low as what Patrick can hit. Not very many people (even those who are professionally trained actors/singers) are even physically capable of hitting those notes. It’s completely common for parts to have to be rewritten to accommodate different ranges.
And re people saying that Tom doesn’t have as good chemistry with Amber/the rest of the cast, keep in mind that the show has only been reopened with him for a few days, whereas Patrick played Hades with that cast for multiple years.
I absolutely adore Patrick Page as Hades, but man was it nice to hear that Hey, Little Songbird has a melody/tune to it. I thought Hewitt was great and will only get better. He did seem to have a slight 'I have to hit this mark' vibe occasionally, but that was night one so I'm excited to see it again when he's settled in.

Something I like about this show is that the characters are so versatile. I mean, goodness knows Chris Sullivan and Andre DeShields aren't very similar performers in any way, but they both did incredibly well as Hermes. So I say even if Hewitt can't hit the lowest notes Page can, that's fine. Let him play it differently.

Saw Hewitt tonight, Page 3 times before. Was about as good as I could hope for a replacement to fill such big shoes and someone so engrained in defining a role. As others mentioned, Hewitt’s singing abilities shone through at times, whereas Page’s bass tones are just one of a kind.
Hermes understudy was in and the kid did an admirable job, but a young, gospel style singing Hermes just wasn’t it for me.
Hades is in fine hands with Hewitt until November and agree no reason to make this a “vs”!
I feel like they “popped” up the orchestrations a bit, and Eva really played up the few belt chances and made it an ever so slightly more dynamic (and dare I say “Broadway-y”) sounding vocal track than I remember.
Wonderful show, will probably feel the same way even come viewing #5!
I was at the matinee today, and I can vouch that Hewitt is giving a very commanding & compelling performance.
He sings the role extremely well, transpositions and all, and he seems to be developing excellent chemistry with the other leads.
The whole performance today was just exceptional; the whole cast was killing it.

I saw Hadestown on Saturday and was pleasantly surprised by Hewitt's performance. His voice sounds deeper, thicker, and more confident than it did in earlier September, when I heard it last. He didn't take any risks in the acting department until Act II. He really dived into the character in Chant (Reprise). It's hard to compare his performance to Page's because they both had different ways of playing Hades, but I will say that I prefered Hewitt's take on the role.
I'd link to it now if Instagram weren't down, but yesterday or the day before, Patrick Page posted that his new return date is Nov. 11. Does anyone know if Hewitt is extending his run?

I do not but I assumed Hewitt would just stay the extra 10 days. If he does not, I’d assume the understudy* would go on instead. And use the vacation swing(s) to fill the worker spot.
*Im not sure if just the one understudy or multiple. If multiple understudies for Hades, I’m not sure who else other than Timothy Hughes..

Thank you! I didn’t realize T did Hades too. I know he does Hermès! I was thinking Anthony Chapman understudies Hades but didn’t want to include that since it was wrong info.
Aha!

Current Overlord of the Underworld, Tom Hewitt, has extended his stay in the role by one week. Originally scheduled to depart the show on November 2, the Tony-nominee will now wrap up his run on Sunday, November 7.
I never saw Page, but I saw Hewitt last week and he was perfection. Great vocals, great arc, great command of the stage. I loved him!
T. Oliver Reed was on as Hermes and he was the MVP of the night for me. He really sang the sh*t out of the role!
