I tried getting the video to post her but wasn't successful.
Paige really has a nice voice but I have to ask this question:
Is she playing Dolly Levi or the Statue of Liberty?
Good, bad, or otherwise, I have gotta appreciate the wish to be different for any production that doesn't put her in a red dress.

The show is all about the red dress. Dolly has made a decision to cast off her widowhood and "rejoin the human race," Her blood is flowing again and she's even a bit lusty.
To dress Dolly in any other color for that number misses the point of the show.

Red on red? Hell no. Let’s go gold, beotches.

Hear, hear. The red dress is designed to be provocative; Dolly is casting off all the social expectations of widows in 19th century New York and appearing in the most life-affirming color there is. Convention and societal standards be damned, she's going to appear how she wants in order to land the object of her affections.

Well, this dress is appropriate for the film because earlier, Dolly has let the parade pass her by while she stands wailing away to the sky. (A crappy movie that didn't understand the material)"
Love Barbra's gold. Other colors can be provocative, too.
NOT Tovah's green dress, please :)

Tovah entered wearing a black Cape. She removed it when when she reached the bottom of the staircase--jn effect, casting off her widowhood.
I STAND CORRECTED, it was seared into my mind as green for some reason.
Either way, don't wear what Tovah wore.

Let me add that when Gower Champion was planning the title number, he wanted the music that brings Dolly down the staircase to be "raunchy". Jerry Herman came up with burlesque-flavored music that became an iconic part of the number.

Other than the wearing black the entire show um...suggestion...didn't Tovah also INSIST on using an Irish brogue the entire time?

Yes she did. And when she quoted her husband she used a voice very much like James Cagney.
She had met with Carol before going into rehearsal and Carol advised against it to no avail. Dorothy Lamour also used a brogue when she played Dolly way back when.

Thanks! I first heard the story from someone who worked in wardrobe that the all black thing was...contentious.

The red dress is iconic, but there’s other ways the character can be dressed up that get the point across as well. Not every production of the show has to imitate the original. In the case of Davis’ costume though, they’d have been better off with imitation.

Definitely Lady Liberty

That is funny –– those opening measures of the song are some of the most thrillingly written/orchestrated instrumental music in the American theatre, and I would never think to call them "raunchy"!!

Oh, they definitely sound like a burlesque strip number!
