Why are they still using the logo from the film?!
Wouldn't Laurents have done something about this by now? Why would he want his show to be connected to a film he hated?

Only the font is really the same. It's not like he's using the stairs and dancing people.

Seeing that marquee, I am totally missing Legally Blonde and Aida.
It's alright but not great.
#4re: Palace Theatre: Home of WEST SIDE STORY
Posted: 1/5/09 at 7:15pmI know it was intentional, but I don't really like the way it looks like the font doesn't... fit on. It almost looks like an ill-fitting photoshop job. But really, the marquee doesn't matter. It's West Side Story!

Why are they still using the logo from the film?!
Movie logo = recognizable = tourists = money = good

Slightly off topic, but I wonder who's gonna take that Mel Brooks' spot where all the Producers/Young Frankenstein ads have been

Posted: 1/5/09 at 7:43pmI think the Palace marquee is my least favorite in all of Broadway. I've always thought that if you were a tourist and had no real knowledge of Broadway you'd never be 100% sure which show was actually playing at the palace with the three ads so close together.

Posted: 1/5/09 at 9:00pmIt's so disturbing to read posts that say Legally Blonde is better than West Side Story. I know you mean the posters, but still, yikes.

erm no one has said that
i said i prefer the LB MARQUEE
I liked LB as a dumb fun piece pf fluff it was very entertaining however West Side Story is a masterpiece and one of my all time faves.
This is a thread about the marquee not the show, please read comments before commenting on them yourself.

It really all depends oh now they DO West Side Story. I haven't been overwhelmed yet, but I'll give it a fair shot (although I also loved seeing Legally Blonde up there.)
And, hey, Laura Belle Bundy looked swell at the Hairspray closing.

Posted: 1/5/09 at 9:40pmI sorta like it, and people will recognize the font instantly, which will draw a passerby audience.

Posted: 1/5/09 at 9:51pmI think Beauty and the Beast used a lot more of the above-marquee space back in its day. I agree....right now it's very hard to properly distinguish which show is there from a distance.

I agree with CATSNY.
The Palace marquee is very unrecognizable as it is literally squeezed between two other random marquees for shows that aren't playing at the Palace...

Here's an example of the marquee before they decided to rent out half of it.

Posted: 1/5/09 at 10:18pmIs it me, or is that just a tarp that's been printed on? Because, most shows use a thick peice of translucent plexiglass, or something... Right?

The Palace used to be a Palace and more visable from
Times Square, but Times and Perception have changed.
Let's see some pics of the Old Palace:
