$12.99 for the digital album? I'll just listen to my sampler until I can get to B&N for a hard copy.
After listening to the "May We Entertain You" it makes me wonder. Where is Sami from? She has a distinct accent.
Patti sounds horrible. Yucky-Yucky.
I think she sounds great on the recording!
Just listen to that overture!!
Has miss Patti been slimmed down AGAIN?
Her left arm wasn't even that thin back here:

LOL!!! Hard to think of Patti LuPone shrinking, in any sense of her persona.
I've listened to the whole album three times in the four hours since I've brought it home!
Sami's accent confuses me, too, because I don't remember her doing one at City Center or...I guess the first time I saw the show on Broadway. I wonder if maybe it's for the character? would it be something Rose told her to do to make herself sound more professional?
I have to admit, I think she sounds pretty horrible on this recording.
I can't figure out what she's doing, but it's almost like she's making fun of being obnoxious and annoying. She brays some of the notes intentionally like a donkey... or like she's trying to tease someone with her over-the-top singing.
It's crude and ugly, and makes Merman's original brassy recording sound tame, by comparison.
I really don't like Patti's work on this at all.
I can only hope it comes off better in a theatre. But as a stand-alone recording? This is kinda awful.
Couldn't disagree with you more, Best12. But that's what makes the world go 'round.

I must say that I found some of the liner notes to be extremely self-serving and indulgent. For instance the note about Sunset Boulevard being an expensive failure on Broadway without Patti is an extreme over-simplification of the facts. Yes, it was expensive and I don't think it ever did recoup, but I highly doubt that Patti's presence would have changed that. And to call a show that ran almost three years and attracted some of the top divas of our time to the role a failure is really questionable.
If Arthur Laurents really wanted this Gypsy to be different and "cast with actors" he really missed the mark. Not to say that the cast are not all terrific actors, but he certainly didn't take any chances or make any revelations in terms of casting, and certainly didn't cast anybody who is known more for their acting than their singing ability. I feel that both Angela Lansbury and Tyne Daly would have fit this description more than this current casting does. And, like her not, even Bernadette Peters was more of a stretch and a gamble in casting.
*Side note* With the offering of Tony to Matt Cavenaugh, Laurents has shown that he can not stick with his convictions. I thought he said he wanted to cast the show with fresh, young faces. A Tony who will be celebrating his 31st birthday about two months after opening is hardly what I would call fresh and young. He should hire whoever did casting for 13 if he really wanted that young cast that he initially claimed it was going to be.
I also don't feel that this is the most complete recording of the show. I think the Bernadette recording holds that, as it includes the Entr' Acte, Small World reprise, the pre-strip incidental music, and curtain music, without having to pay extra and buy it from only one specific retailer. It's nice to have those cut songs for the sake of posterity, but I would have preferred having all the music that is actually still in the show and heard nightly on the standard disc. Make those cut songs the additions for the Barnes & Noble edition if you really want to lay claim to the title of "Most Complete Recording."
Taken in total, with the bonus Barnes & Noble disc, there's no question that it is the most complete recording of Gypsy and it is not inaccurate for Time Life to be making that claim. The Bernadette recording includes a little bit of extra incidental music and of course, the "Small World" reprise not heard here, but the Lupone recording contains "Seattle to LA," the full dance music for "Broadway," the cut songs and then the playoffs and the Exit Music on the 2nd disc, not included on the Bernadette recording. I hardly think it is a great imposition to order from Barnes & Noble if you want that additional content or that it is somehow a veiled secret on how to go about ordering or purchasing it. It's even cheaper at Barnes & Noble ($11.96 currently, vs. $16.99 at Amazon).
As far as putting the cut songs on the main disc, in the niche market of Broadway cast recordings, there are now five Broadway cast recordings and two soundtracks (not including the many other Gypsy recordings that are out there). Considering that glut of options, the main single disc version of the LuPone production really needed to offer something that no other Gypsy recording offered before, in this case, the seven cut songs. It's an incentive for someone beyond the core collectors and fans to consider picking up not just any version of Gypsy, but THIS one.
This new recording could have just offered the main Gypsy songs and no extra material and have been done with it. It amazes me that with all of this additional content, some people STILL find something to complain about.
And rightfully so. This show has been in the recording studio so many times I feel that they should be able to go in and give us something better than what has been provided in the past, and they didn't do that. I paid my 13 dollars. I have every right to complain.

...in your demented, ill-formed and irrational opinion.
Just because it's different from yours, huh? Classy.

Wow...
Cats, you formed an opinion months ago, without hearing a note of the album. The self entitlement and self righteousness of your posts about it have been astounding. So continue shaking your fists at the sky or sulk in your parents' basement hugging the Bernadette recording tightly to your chest and just keep imagining the fantasy Gypsy recording that exists only in your dreams.
