And apparently Mamet plans on writing the book, lyrics, and music. Which should be very interesting.
I'll try and find the interview from a few months ago when he talked about it.
ETA: Q. What's on the agenda for you next?
A. I have a book coming out in January called Bambi vs. Godzilla, a nonfiction book about the movie business. Then I'm doing a musical with Patti LuPone in Los Angeles in the spring, and then I'll do a couple of movies, if it amuses God to spare me a little while longer.
For the musical, I'm doing everything. The lyrics and even the music. If I can find the bobbin for my sewing machine, I'm even going to sew the frocks. I want to do the whole damn thing!

Posted: 8/24/07 at 1:01pmThis is great news. Waitress in Yellowstone was supposed to play the Kirk Douglas Theatre last season, but they moved it to next spring for one reason or another. I didn't know Patti was attached. The theatre is pretty small. I would never have guessed that she would be there.

Posted: 8/24/07 at 1:21pmI was one of the few people who saw Patti LuPone on Broadway in another Mamet offering called "The Water Engine" which ran for about three weeks there following its Off-Broadway transfer.
"Smart! And into all those exotic mystiques -- The Kama Sutra and Chinese techniques. I hear she knows more than seventy-five. Call me tomorrow if you're still alive!"

I know Mamet has written lyrics, but I don't think he's ever written music.
I'm so jealous of those who cam see this, I'm so curious as to how it's gonna turn out.

I found a page with ticketing information and a very interesting description of the show.

Winnie and her son Doug are planning a long-anticipated trip to Yellowstone National Park. But when an unlikely suspect does her an injustice, their trip is diverted and Winnie ends up on a fantastical journey to Yellowstone where she meets a woodsman who grants wishes.
Written (including music and lyrics!) by Pulitzer Prize winner and master wordsmith David Mamet.

His wife, Rebecca Pidgeon, is British, so maybe it's rubbed off on him.
Also, in case anyone's interested, "The Waitress in Yellowstone" was originally written as a straight play, and has been published in the collection "Five Television Plays." I guess the new version will have songs added.
