Patti LuPone was almost Hedwig!?

In an interview with Broadway.com John Cameron Mitchell mentions they offered the role to Patti, but decided to close before she responded. I honestly can't even imagine it, but can't say I'm not intrigued.

"During Hedwig's 18-month-long Broadway run, six stars took the wig out of the box as the titular character. Mitchell revealed that there could have been a seventh diva added into the mix. "We asked Patti [LuPone] to play Hedwig on Broadway," he said. "She actually thought about it, and before she could decide, we had to pull the plug [on the show]."

I cannot stress this enough - I would have DIED. This casting would have gotten me to drop by NYC so fast.

There are rumors, but not sure why one would put more faith in those over JCM saying it was offered to Patti?!

I would've paid premium pricing to see that spectacle. It certainly would've topped seeing her play a tuba as Mrs. Lovett because why not?

I would've killed to see this. Even if it was a disaster, it would've been a fascinating disaster. And I'm sure Patti's versions of Wicked Little Town and Origin Of Love would've been beautiful. (Hmm, maybe someone can convince her to add one of them to her shows...)
