I hardly ever watch this anymore but obviously had to last night for Patti. Two things stood out. She said she would love to do a revival of “The Matchmaker” and for a play that has never been revived, I do wonder if that would work…
Also, she said she regretted not being able to do Fosca in “Passion” but her “foot was on the plane” to go do “Sunset” in London and those dates don’t add up. Could she have been talking about a workshop? I’m very confused.

Well she had the Broadway first refusal in her contract, so I'm sure she was assuming she'd be in London doing Sunset through when Passion was to open Broadway in May 1994 and then opening Sunset on Broadway that Fall.
Of course, we know how that turned out and Patti instead got a new pool.

I believe this is exactly what happened. It’s known she was offered to originally create the role. She mentioned on Theater Talk once how she regrets it. At least she got to do in concert in years later. The Witch was such a major miss. She would’ve been absolutely ideal.

She’s said she wanted to do Cinderella instead. A major miss, indeed. For both roles.
Long live LuPone.

Ok i just rewatched it and she said when she turned “Passion” down it was going to be at Lincoln Center. So was that original then delayed a few years? Because if that was the same production, wouldn’t she have been free from “Sunset” way before “Passion” actually happened?
Maybe this shouldn’t confuse me as much as it does lol.

They probably found Donna in the meantime, I recall her discussing the rigorous audition process.

I love the shoutout to Pacific Overtures from both of them. An underrated Sondheim masterpiece which seems to be missing in most Sondheim tributes, revues, and celebrations.

I was delighted that Cynthia Nixon really knows her stuff. The clip of Patti choosing between two actresses for roles and Cynthia immediately shouting out every role Patti did was great fun.

It was a fun show. Patti was tamer than she usually is on the show. I do wish Andy spoke to Doyle a little more, as sometimes the bartender gets to talk more.
Also, I wish Andy mentioned that Company also stars Katrina Lenk, I don’t believe he did.

It was great. Hopefully we’ll get another production of that show sometime soon.

You are correct. He didn't mention Katrina Lenk, who is the leading lady.

I’m so happy that Patti chose Bernadette over Vanessa as the Witch. I feel it’s subtlety the only compliment (as mild as it was) she has given Bernadette. In addition to perhaps wanting to replace Bernadette in SUNDAY - Bernadette’s performance must have impressed her enough to want to take on the role herself?

I think so? In October 1993 they did a workshop at Lincoln Center, when the show was still called Passione d'amore and Peter Gallagher played Giorgio: https://through-my-memoirs.tumblr.com/search/passione
