This interview is GOLD. I love this woman so much.

I find it amusing that some people on a liberal theater message board seem to think a woman in 2018 should censor her words.

This is the first negativeanythingwe've heard about Bette inDolly, right?"

Here's a negative story about Bette in general.  When she was nominated for "For The Boys" at the Golden Globes, she stepped right on my foot.  I looked up at her but said nothing, cause well it's Bette Midler.  She looked at me with such a nasty look on her face.  I could imagine what she wanted to say to me, but didn't.  She sure didn't say "sorry".  But it did give me a story to retell.

Yes, the world needs more mealy-mouthed "humble" celebrities who ignore the horrific things going on in our time.

It's all just repeated gossip, ad nauseaum and her remarks belong in New Idea or whatever trashy mags. [tabloids?] are in the US.

It's now not interesting what she says, she just gets off on her own self-created role as Queen Bee.

An amazing talent that deserves recognition but I have no respect for dirt dishing even if trashy reporters keep bringing up the obvious.

Time to go on that well deserved journey to 'discover the world', and return to do the occasional concert, and just do what you excel at--character driven singing.

“Well behaved women rarely make history.”

I also find it hilarious that in this day and age we have people criticizing her for answering questions that were asked of her and speaking her mind.

THAT’S what gets dull.

And I find it ironic that in defending her freedom of speech, you are criticizing others for exercising theirs.

I really don’t have a problem with her answering questions in an interview as far as it relates to people who have hurt her. Not that she should give 2 figs what I think. I do find it ridiculous to say that talented people have the right to be temperamental. That sounds elitist to me. But she absolutely has the right to say what she likes. I actually enjoyed most of the interview and politically she and I are 200% in agreement.

I think one can admire her candor, her brassiness, and her fearlessness and yet still find things to critique about regarding the CONTENT of what she says. She's inviting comment by being so open. You can respect her bravery for doing so, but being entertaining and brave doesn't shield you from people responding to what you say. One can also agree and admire her for saying one thing but also think she's still being petty for saying another. I think there's a line between honesty and just being mean for sport or due to unresolved issues.

Also, the comment about being talented means you're entitled to be temperamental is a comment worth discussion because some times being that way goes from being individualistic and having high standards to just indulging in pure egoism and selfishness towards others. However, I think Patti is self-aware and knows what she is doing when she acts that way.

I also think the fights she had to have in her career made her a warrior who is always ready for a fight (or even looking for one). Attack first that way you won't be vulnerable. It's the same for a lot of "divas" who had to fight against so much just for their career and had to deal with public fall-out throughout their careers. It's understandable. Not always admirable, but some times it really is admirable.

I love LuPone and always will. I have zero issue with anyone speaking their minds as long as they are okay with me saying my peace in return.

I think this interview comes off as small and petty...not really befitting a legend of her stature who is still working regularly. You usually get this type of bold and exaggerated interview from someone who’s washed up which she clearly is not.

Given the traction it seems to be getting, the odds that they care they just rehashed a bunch of old material are probably low. When people stop clicking because it is just Madonna and ALW, then they'll find new ground to cover.

I’m sorry but what was bitchy about what she said about Glenn Close. She’s been very open about Close apologizing to her recently. The anecdote she shared was clearly in good fun even if the journalists decided to paint it as something else.

As to the pearl-clutching that’s going on in this thread, I continue to be surprised by the board’s tendency to stand up for people who really don’t need it (what in the world does it matter if she speaks her mind about super rich, acclaimed, stuck up folks like Andrew Lloyd Webber, Madonna, and Hal Prince?) while viciously throwing under the bus others who actually have something to lose. It’s one of the reasons so many of us who used to love this board rarely post anymore.

Are talented people sometimes excused for being temperamental? By all means, but that doesn’t mean they have the RIGHT. I have certain non-theater related talents, but I try to be gracious. So, I would say so do Kelli O’Hara, Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Anthony Rapp, Norbert Leo Butz, and Michael Urie. Talent is no excuse for acting like an ass.”

I don't think she should have to censor her words. She can say what she wants; however, people who disagree with her statements also shouldn't have to censor their words. If I or anyone else disagrees with the idea that "If someone has the talent they have the RIGHT to be temperamental," then we can definitely state that.

That being said, I do still love Patti LuPone. I just don't agree with her all the time.

Audiences have the right to understand lyrics being sung.

I've seen Patti in countless productions, including War Paint, and never had a problem understanding her.

Honestly, Patti is simply continuing the tradition of the brassy Broadway diva that's been celebrated by musical theatre fans for nearly a century.  Compared to Ethel Merman, Patti's a wallflower.  If people ask her about it, she should speak as honestly about it as she feels comfortable.  As for he "have the RIGHT" quote...eh.  It sounds like something she'd say.  Millions of fools absolutely wet themselves every time Madonna says something nasty or stupid.  Trump was elected and still has devoted followers.  Even Melania has fans.  Putting it into perspective, I'm not going to let it put any wrinkles in my panties.  Even the thread title is OTT.

I feel like I know the content of a Patti interview before I even read it. I think that's what bothers me about her -- she's so damned repetitive. Come up with new stuff. A comedian can't tell the same jokes for 25 years without the joke becoming stale.

Oh, the whole interview is in good fun. And clearly, the interviewer is asking all the questions specifically to get juicy quotes.

I happen to agree I miss the days when artists weren't completely sanitized by PR firms. Cher's recent interview about THE CHER SHOW is a great example. She gives interviews like she's hanging out with the reporter and just dishing. Most artists are too consumed with their brand. Some authenticity.

True, she clearly holds on to grudges. And it's understandable if some people are bothered by that.

But what I found especially interesting is how she offers up dish on herself, namely Sondheim not always being happy with her and possibly not wanting her for this part.

That is both against the PR firm way of giving interview as well as perhaps the only new piece of information.

She’s answering the questions that are asked of her. It’s the reporters, if anyone, who are “repetitive.”

Celebrities decline to answer questions all the time. She could do so if she wanted to avoid answering. Clearly, she likes playing the part of "tell it like it is" diva.

Maybe she does. But I’ll still take a million of her and her honesty as opposed to a “Broadway is the best!!” type like Bernadette Peters, who has not an ounce of authenticity left in her, with everything she says seeming carefully scripted and approved by publicists.

Although Midler being "temperamental" in Hello Dolly! is news to me. I know she was compensated handsomely for her involvement but I never heard of any tensions in the Hello Dolly! crew. If anything seems like that was one of the tighter Broadway casts of recent years.

ETA: I don't see why Bernadette Peters is inauthentic. Maybe she genuinely appreciates the people she works with. Some people are like that. For instance is Lin Manuel Miranda "inauthentic" because you're not going to get a negative quote about him? Donna Murphy? Kelli O'Hara? I think to survive in the business as long as some of these people have survived one way to do it is to genuinely like the people you work with. Doesn't mean everything is sunshine and roses, but Patti's brand of "candor" is not the only way to authentic.

THANKS for this.  So very true.  And it applies to all of us -- and I, for one, need to remember it more often

THANKS.
