Why does he look like Christpher Walken to me???
SO excited about this movie! This pic makes me even more so!

A 30-year-old-looking guy with a Bride-of-Frankenstein streak of white in his hair, with predictably pale skin and dark eye make-up. I'm sorry, I'm just SO not optimistic about this.
I thought that was Cruella De Ville actually...
As I feared, he looks way too young for the role.
It DOES look like Christopher Walken.
a predictable look. but still cool.
The first thing I thought when I saw the makeup and hair was that it was Edward Scissorhand-ish. Kinda...
which begs the question...why didn't they just hire Walken for the role?? He IS older and can sing!
Actually, it made me think of Edward Scissorhands too.
What do you want? the second lyric in the show says "His skin was pale and his eye was odd"
He makes death look hot.
and remember, there is a 20th century auto in the backround, so this is Sweeney without lighting, music, or editing. I think he looks great, given that it is not in the context of a filmed shot.
The setting doesn't help.
My point about the make-up was that -- on him -- it happens to remind me of Edward Scissorhands too. *shrugs* I'm just biased against him in the role, as I'm not a huge fan of his anyway.
You may all continue to be excited.
As with the HAIRSPRAY photos, we need to wait until the publicity photos come out before we judge anything.
I, for one, don't like the picture at all.
Predictable? It's SWEENEY TODD! What do you want him to look like? Dody Goodman in GREASE 2?

I'd like to wait and see what he looks like under proper lighting, because that can do wonders in terms of how the makeup and clothes look.
*eyeroll*
Predictable FOR Johnny Depp. Isn't his "skin pale and eye odd" in pretty much any movie he makes with Burton? Had they cast someone who I believe to be more age-and-type appropriate for the role, they could have afforded to take some more inspired creative liberties. As it is, it still just looks like Depp in a Burton film to me.

I tried to join so we could see the rest... but there's no way to do it. You must have to call them or something. Too bad.

First of all, how old is Sweeney? I'm not trying to pick a fight here but the story takes place around 1830, and the average life span, especially in urbanized areas, couldn't have been much higher than around 45, between pestilence, poor sanitary conditions, pollution from factories, arsenic in dyes, etc. Sweeney's been locked up for 16 years, I'm sure he looks more like a holocaust survivor than a hulk. So given Johanna's age of 16, Todd's probably somewhere between 36 and 40. He can't be in the greatest health. Judge Turpin, comingfrom a wealthier class of men, most likely has a longer lfe since he lives comfortably, eats well - perhaps too richly - and isn't from the lower middle-class situation as Sweeney.
I get not thinking he's the right type, but I don't understand the argument that IF you cast someone the right age/type, you'll go a completely different way with the look.
What kind of look would you have liked?
Oh for the love of Mary and Jospeh - that is a picture of him walking out of a trailer. You can tell NOTHING about how he's going to look on film from that shot.
And since when is Depp not age appropriate for Todd?
Well, those monkey glands give him the skin of an 8 year old girl who has never been in the sun.
But he is, in fact, age-appropriate.

That's a cool look for Sweeney. I'll bet under the lights, it'll look even better.
Sweeney Todd and Lovett were younger than they have been portrayed onstage in "Sweeney Todd."
However, I am THRILLED that Virginia Graham is back from the dead.
