I love how negative people are. As if the make-up for any stage show of Sweeney Todd is any different.

I agree. That photo looks great. What part of the movie do you think the costume is for? The first part of movie that ends with A Little Priest or the second part of the movie? I would think that it's part of the second half of the movie, given the fact that he has a holster on his belt with his razor in it, doubt when he enters in the movie, he'll have a holster and one of his razors on him along with the napkin.
Now we just need a photo of Helena as Mrs. Lovett, Alan as Turpin, Sacha as Pirelli, Chris Lee as Gentleman's Ghost, Jayne as Johanna, Ed as Tobias and I forget what the name of the actor playing Anthony is, along with the rest of the cast, then of course after that, the first preview which I think will probably be attached to either Pirates 3 or Harry Potter 5.
Minus the hands, it reminds me of an aging Edward Scissorhands.

My guess is that's when he goes to challenge Pirelli. He has his blade handy to offer as the price for the competition. Then again, Sacha Baron Cohen was in LA recenlty for the premiere of his fiancee's movie so it could be a scene later on in the movie.
Maybe when he's waiting for Judge Turpin to come?
For the millionth time YES! Filming has RESUMED. Depp's daughter was ill several weeks ago. She's fine, at home for some time now and all is back to normal.
Oy!
Thanks for posting the new picture. Great to see the intensity of his eyes in that shot, love the red in it. I still can't get over how much I like the costume. I have a thing for pinstripes...

Poor Brody. Poor put upon Brody.

He looks rediculous! He looks like he kept his pirate costume, and stole Lily Munsters wig on the way to the shoot.
I agree with a lot of you. At first glance, I thought it was Edward Scissorhands.. but I'm deciding to be optimistic about this movie ^_^
Movies are about the director. His vision is what finally ends up on the screen, no matter how fantastic the screenplay, performances - and in this case - score may be.
There are hundreds of mediocre movies with great performances, screenplays and music, but lacking in directorial talent. A picture in a parking lot of Depp's hair suggests absolutely nothing, either positive or negative about the movie.
I can't think of a more creative director working today who's more appropriate for Sweeney Todd. A couple days ago there was a thread about everyone's favorite movies. Many of the posts included Burton movies.
I understand that the great musical of our time being committed to film is nervous making. But this appears to be a very serious creative team involved in a very important project.
I really don't get all the smelling salts about this.

At least Mr. Depp looks more like a barber than the "Image hosted by Tripod!" pic. :P ---------

Huh. Picture works for me. Oh well, as quick trip to the photobucket, and here ya go.
That's the face that screams "Sweeney" to me. Not some scrawny wisp with stripey teal pants and a silly wig.
The point of the character of Sweeney Todd is that he was an unassuming modest man transformed emotionally by the injustice to which he was subjected. For him to turn into a physical Neanderthal would be idiotic.
But you're right. In lesser hands the casting could very easily have gone in a Perlmanesque direction.
A hulking Sweeney makes absolutely no sense. He's psychologically dangerous, but not physically. When the tenderness and tragedy sets in at the end, the Incredible Hunk type casting wouldn't work.

His looks aren't as important to me as is this the Sondheim version and can he sing it as well as Cerveris.
When I first saw this pic, I thought it was from Edward Scissorhands too. Then I saw the hands, lol. I agree with alot of you guys, we can't judge his appearance by this picture. We are just going to have to wait and see when the publicity photos come out. Hopefully it will be good!

Some people on the Tim Burton Collective are thinking that pieces of the costume remind them of other Depp characters in Burton movie like the pinstripe pants are the same kind as Victor's in Corpse Bride, the vest apparently looks similar to Wonka's in Charlie, and of course the wig is Edward Scissorhands.
I'm really looking forward to the movie, and to the first preview. I'm thinking that the first preview will come out with either Pirates 3(Depp) or Harry Potter 5(Rickman, Spall, and Carter).

scanned for your pleaure... or scrutiny.
his hair looks like a skunk but i am still unsure of him being sweeney. I guess i'll just have to wait and find out
You know what? I'd totally do him. Hot.
I hate the Gray/White streak through his hair.

I hate that streak too.
I think that may the be the point that most people have been trying to make..... Sweeney should not be hot. End of story.
I also don't think that people are saying he should be ripped or muscular... I think he should be stockier, broader shoulders and just overall bigger boned, possibly even chubby due to muscles eating themselves.
I think the makeup and the costumes are great though. There is a reason that the costumes are similar to Sleepy Hollow, being that it was the english colonies and the time periods are fairly close to each other. It only makes sense.

I agree, to me Sweeney isn't someone like Jason or Michael Myers as the big dumb mute guy who is muscular and intimadating to look at. Sweeney shouldn't look like a threat, he should be someone that you wouldn't think would be insane or homicidal, give you that false sense of security about him before he slits your throat. To me he's also more of a thinker than a doer him thinking about how he's going to lure The Beadle or Judge Turpin to his parlor.
I for one am looking forward to the first preview for this.
