What are people predicting will shutter as a result of a lack of a Tonys bump? I predict Bright Star which would be very lucky to make it until Labor Day. I also think that Fiddler may struggle to make it until the New Years as well... Other thoughts???

I would be surprised if Bright Star didn't post closing this week.
I also think Fiddler is not looking good.
Truthfully, I think those are the only two shows who have grim prospects after tonight.

I hope Carmen finds work. Maybe she can be in the king and I tour like she was in the South Pacific one.

Which would be terribly disappointing. I found Bright Star just wonderful. And Cusack is an inspiration. Is the musical as "revolutionary" as Hamilton? No. But I still found it a breath of fresh air. Quite charming really.
Someone suggested that Carmen go on the road with The King and I? Well, I have friends who want to see it when it comes to LA and I would see it again, probably a couple of more times if Cusack were in it.
As for Fiddler…I don't know how well it's still selling tickets, but it is an old reliable, family friendly musical that could attract the tourist crowd still? Or maybe not?

Wouldn't it be kinda counter-productive to put extra money into Bright Star to keep it open until the Tonys and then close it a week later? I'd leave it at least another week to see if the performance bumps sales. Nobody could have speculated on any wins anyway...

Bumps usually happen within a few days of the awards....people being impressed and grabbing tickets. If they weren't interested enough after the Awards, it's not enough that they might eventually buy tickets. They need the flood gates to open.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for them.

She has been working consistently, without fail, since she was 20 years old. Now that she has a Tony nomination, I do not see that changing.
She also said that if Bright Star were to tour, she would join along with it which would be lovely. I'll be so sad to see the show close, but hey, it brought Cusack to Broadway and the industry certainly knows her name now. I predict many more Tonys showcases for that talented star.

I really wish Bright Star had done a different song. I love "If You Knew My Story" but I just don't think it was the showcase they needed. If they wanted to really show Carmen, I think they should've done "At Long Last." That would've given Carmen a moment on par with those of Cynthia and Jessie. She sounded lovely as always but the opening number is not her show stopper. Or they could have done a more uptempo song. I adored the performance, but if I hadn't already seen and loved the show, I don't know if it would make me go get tickets.

I agree Bright Star didnt choose the best song, though Carmen and the cast sounded lovely. "Sun's Gonna Shine" would have been a good uptempo crowd pleaser, and the most commercial option. I figure they had performed it on other TV shows so wanted to go with something else. And in that case "At Long Last" would have been a tremendous showcase for Cusack.
Interestingly, they just posted a casting notice for replacements, and the auditions are happening a week from now. So maybe they are committed to holding out for longer than we think? Of course if they announce closing, these auditions could always be used to cast the potential tour.

Equity rules determine the need for replacement auditions....it should not be seen as a factor.

"I wouldn't be surprised either if Bright Star posts closing - I would be surprised if they continued to Labour Day with news out there that Steve and Edie are putting their own money into it. I really do hope it plays at least until the end of the month as I do have tickets and really want to see it.

Interestingly, Cusack has never actually disclosed her age (and the info is nowhere to be found online). Even in her NY Times profile she wouldn't reveal it to the reporter, giving the reason as something like "since she portrays both 16 and 38 in the show." However she moved to England in 1993 when she was about 20 so you can do the bit of math.
She toured as Elphaba in 2007 and stuck with the show for a while actually, so it is somewhat surprising that she never did it on Broadway. But honestly that bear of a role, she probably wanted a break after having trecked it all over the country. I'm personally glad she waited to make her debut with such a special and original role.

I hated that If You Knew My Story song....Stop telling me how great your story is, and if I knew it I'd have a great story to tell and all that crap and TELL ME YOUR STORY!
That's why I am at the show! I don't need preamble, GET TO IT. But the show is just a mess anyway you cut it....there was no saving it, regardless of Tony song choice.
