Re: Reidel: He really should not have given away what Andrea Martin does in Pippin. It's much more fun if the audience going in doesn't know. (I'm guessing, only guessing mind you, they kept her song off of talk shows and such to keep it a surprise.)
Does anyone have any idea of how accurate he is with these predictions?
His logic is a bit messed up-I've seen shows win best actor/actress as a sort of consolation prize for losing best musical.
And I still think Patina will take best actress. (Isherwood's early prognostications come the closest to what I believe will happen.)
"Osnes and Patina both give amazing performances, and it is hard to pick one that is better. The more I think about a Tony Award being an award given after a campaign, I think if most are torn between the two, Osnes' incredibly nice and cordial personality may just be the feather that tips scales for just enough voters."
bdn223, I think that part of what Laura has going for her is the generosity with which she has performed (or just shown up) when others in the Broadway community are being honored or is having a charity event. She has been tremendously generous with her time and support ever since she arrived in 2007 and I think that this will be remembered by Tonys voters.
It's not about who's nice or not. As cute as Laura Osnes is in Cinderella, it's a very cookie cutter role. She does extraordinarily well with it, but after seeing her in Bonnie and Clyde last season, this was a bland performance (no fault of hers-it's the role, not the actress). It is pleasant, but Patina's performance is riskier and she has been making the rounds as well on the talk show circuit.

I know we're forbidden to discuss things here, but WHY are people lionizing Nora Ephron as some great theatrical institution that must be honored somehow? She's written LUCKY GUY, and IMAGINARY FRIENDS for the theater. That's it. She was a great New Yorker, sure, but a Broadway/theater legend/institution/whatever? Not at all.
Just thought that was worth bringing up, when many, myself included, think that the voters will honor her, not for Best Play, but in another category-- be it Actor or Director.
WickedRocks, thanks for mentioning that Riedel “Pippin” spoiler…was about to go read the article until I saw that.
Oddly enough, Director of Play ended up being the most difficult for me. It wouldn’t surprise me if any of the nominees one and was neck-and-neck-and-neck between MacKinnon, Wolfe, and Martin for me.
And, without further ado:

I'm not going to pretend that I know a blessed thing about the plays. :) (Though I'd really like to see V&S&M&S if I get the chance. I've at least seen most of these musicals -all but Motown- so feel like I can make an educated call on those.)
It seriously pained me to put Kinky Boots for Score, since I think comparing its (fun, but) commercial blandness to the brilliance of Tim Minchin's Matilda lyrics is an absolute joke, but this is a predictions thread, so it is what it is. I will be THRILLED to be wrong.
Same goes for Billy Porter (liked) and Bertie Carvel (LOVED), but I feel like Kinky Boots needs some bones thrown at it somewhere, and those are the two that I think will get said bones.
To me, Annaleigh Ashford was the best thing about Kinky Boots and deserves an award for her performance, but there's no way she's winning over Andrea Martin. Rightfully. Just bad timing for Annaleigh.
And while I think Patina wholly deserves the award over Laura Osnes this year, if only for the difference in the depth of the roles and the impressive skill set (and balls) it takes to be a compelling Leading Player, I think Osnes is a fantastic performer and a lovely person and I wouldn't frown if there was an upset. But I think this is Patina's. I liked but didn't love her in Sister Act, but she blew me away in Pippin.

I find it weird that 10 of the 15 experts predict Osnes to win out over Miller and yet their "official" prediction is the opposite.
The other thing I find weird is that most of us are predicting Cinderella for orchestrations and yet no critics even have them on their radar as a possible winner.
On that GoldDerby page, it says: "Gold Derby surveyed 15 experts, our editors and hundreds of users to predict the winners of this Sunday's Tony Awards."
So while the "experts" predictions are part of it, they take other predictions into consideration as well in order to "calculate" a final overall prediction.
