Prince of Broadway in Japan!

Posted: 9/6/15 at 11:22amPlease, please include a song from that step-child show Pacific Overtures. I know it's not one of his "hits", but that show always gets the last row. Pretty Lady or Poems or Bowler Hat or Next. And they're opening in Japan! I see that Act 2 songs is incomplete. I'll stay tuned.

Because I said I would, here are those name translations regarding who’s singing what. Google Translate does fine with some names but others end up a complete mess due to how Japanese phonetics work. English is a much more
Keep in mind the list is incomplete (there are more songs to come
Act 1
Tonight- Ramin Karimloo and Kaley Ann Voorhees
Waiting for the Girls Upstairs-Tony Yazbeck, Shuler Hensley, Emily Skinner, Nancy Opel, Josh Grisetti,
If I Were a rich Man- Shuler Hensley
The Phantom of the Opera- Ramin Karimloo and Kaley Ann Voorhees
Music of the Night- Ramin Karimloo and Kaley Ann Voorhees
Act 2
Company- Ramin Karimloo, Kaley Ann Voorhees, Josh Grisetti, Marriand Torres, Shuler Hensley, Nancy Opel, Emily Skinner, Tony Yazbeck
Don’t Cry for me, Argentina-
Broadway Baby-Emily Skinner
Kiss of the Spider Woman- Reon Yuzuki
Ballad of Sweeney Todd- Shuler Hensley, Nancy Opel, Company
Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man -Bryonha Marie Parham, Kaley Ann Voorhees
Also, though not listed on the official site yet Whatever Lola Wants from Act 1 will be performed by Yuzuki. Check out this tweet by Jason Robert Brown about that.

What happened to "All I Need is One Good Break" and "Heart"?
I'm sure the talent level is far higher, but the song list reminds me of variety shows we did in high school.
Color me "Not Seeing the Point".

They're still in the show. They just haven't told us who's singing those songs yet. I didn't not list the other songs as I felt it would be redundant to keep listing the entire song list over and over.

I missed your post earlier. From what I could gleam from the numerous articles in Japanese about this show is that they are planning on doing something from Pacific Overtures. From what was said I was guessing Pretty Lady (The interviewer was asking Stro and Hal about Yuzuki and It was mentioned that they wanted her to play a sailor, so Pretty Lady made the most sense to me). But don't quote me on that, my Japanese language skills are elementary at best.

From what I've seen of Reon Yuzuki in Takarazuka shows, she's pretty ideal for Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Thank you for the translation, kami. I am mortified that I neglected to thank you in my previous post.

So, there's going to be a special on Japanese TV, Sept. 27, for the show. A behind the scenes look if you will, of the design presentation and meet and greet from last Friday. There is already a preview up on
Edit: fixed link

More from the man. On this show. On Broadway. On Producing. On Hits and Flops and even on Brando.

I find it random that Tony Yazbeck is in this now with no news or notification. He's coming off of a tony nomination for a leading role in a fairly long running broadway show.

Pretty damn good interview, I'd say.
Love how he picks up on SOMETHING ROTTEN being totally a George Abbott-style musical. Had no idea he suffered a stroke 7 years ago. And wow, I really hope at least ONE of his incoming shows revives the spirit of a great new Hal Prince show to stand beside his past classics (although I honestly don't have much optimism about PRINCE OF BROADWAY being the show to do it.) The man deserves one more exclamation point on his career.

Great interview. Somehow I think he is slightly annoyed that CamMac prefers Les Miz to Phantom??. And I know this is nitpicking but he seems to be confused about Evita. It closed on Broadway in 1983 - a full five years before Phantom opened there. However it ran in London until 1986 a little over six months before Phantom opened there.

While NO ONE will argue more than me how much of an influence Mr Prince has had as a producer/director/godfather of Broadway, I truly don't understand how this show will work. Is it just "hey, here are some songs from some shows I've done. But it's not the original staging and choreography, mind you!?" I mean that clip of Ramin singing "Being Alive" alone is worth my time, especially if he rips his shirt off again.

I would imagine it'll be much like Sondheim on Sondheim. Some little quotes here and there and some songs. But it's odd because wouldn't the whole point of it be to see the original staging? And see why he's so famous, etc?

I assume that would be too expensive. Jerome Robbins' Broadway did that and cost a fortune ( course they used some of the original sets and the costumes for each show.) Fosse went for a pretty simplistic design, but there's the prob with this one that I see... You can show a Fosse production number restaged. Prince, who I think is probably my fave Broadway director, often didn't even stage the musical numbers for his shows. Some of these shows he didn't even direct but produced. He's talked about how he doesn't remember the original staging anyway so his excitement is that he gets to stage them again but... I dunno, I admit I just kinda don't get the concept for this.

Hm... Who is doing the musical stagings for this? I just feel like who in the world would go see this besides theater people? There's no story to follow, it's just a bunch of "hit" songs I guess?

why why why why whyyyyyyy!! they are doing it all wrong!!!! why are they using so many random songs that people dont know. I know Hal has said he wanted to give the people something knew, something that JRB failed to do, but the people want to see the things he's famous for!! Why dont they have a dance ensemble!!!

Susan Stroman. And, I believe she may be getting a co-director credit (which I suppose makes sense if this is basically a revue of songs...)

no it hasnt been confirmed, but i know that they are hoping for it to transfer in the spring so we shall see.
and i agree that the staging looked boring to me. and its not a revue, and does have a story to follow. Its about Hal Prince's career and theres voice over in the show of him talking about the experience, show, etc..

With a small amount of luck hoping to catch this in early December , tickets for Tokyo are on sale now, but Osaka I can't seem to find.
