I'm well aware this is a gossip news item and frankly the first I've heard of such a development. Then again, I haven't really been paying attention.
Tread carefully, tweens.

I think it's just gossip. IMO, Idina is too old for Elphaba.
"She has reportedly beaten out Glee's Lea Michele for the Ephlaba role in the new Wicked movie"
Who the fuq is Ephlaba?
Even though this is gossip, I hope it's true. If Wicked must be made into a film (and it must, because the teen girls and boys that form the Wicked fan club will be dying to see it), I would much rather have a 40-year old Menzel in the role than any aged Michele. Much like I'd rather see a 40-something LuPone as Eva than a 30-year old Madonna, but we all saw how that turned out.
Hello. She's painted completely green.... They can make her look as young as they want!
As far as the movie version of WICKED ever being done, I got a kick out of Chenoweth's reply to Andy Cohen when she guested on his show last week. He asked if and when she would be recreating her role if the movie was made. She laughed and said at this point she'd probably be cast as Madame Morrible.
Girls, movie magic can de-age anyone.
Plus, with the explosion of Frozen and the Travolta SNAFU, Idina is an extremely viable choice for the movie. A year ago, I would have absolutely discounted her for the movie, but now I wouldn’t be surprised if she got the part.

Voicing an animated movie and having her name mispronounced made the difference?!
Julia Andrews is the one who played Ephlaba in the national tour?

Were you the makeup artist for Lucille Ball in Mame?
That's hilarious Blaxx
Yeah, let's have Idina, Kristen, and Norbert go back to Shiz for their 20th reunion!
Gossip is called gossip because it isn't news.
I love how nowhere in the article does it mention she originated the role. They just kind of write it like she's the Eve Harrington to Lea Michele's Margo Channing snatching the role out of her hands.
Very questionable indeed, since it doesn't seem as though there has been much news of a Wicked movie moving forward at all...except that it will happen eventually. Which has been the case for at least the last ten years.
Maybe with green makeup, Idina could still pull it off, but she's really aging out of the role. After the success of FROZEN, I just wish they'd make the Wicked film animated. From a casting perspective, it would allow for the novelty of having the two original actresses in their parts (who both now have not-so-insignifcant followings of their own), and I just think a story of this nature (ESPECIALLY a musical) would translate better. It's so much easier to watch animated characters sing than real life actors lip-sync. (And then there's the flying and the magic...)
I never want to see Lea Michele play this part. I don't think she has an ounce of the role in her.
It could depend on how much time passes between Elphaba's flight from Shiz and her reign of terror. In the musical it's implied that no more than a few months at most have passed from the start of the story to the end. If on film it's established that Elphaba has been on the loose acting as a liberator/terrorist for years, then Idina could certainly play at least the adult Elphaba.

"then Idina could certainly play at least the adult Elphaba."
Except that if Idina was playing "adult" Elphaba then she wouldn't be singing "Defying Gravity" unless there is a pretty big rewrite to the story. I can only imagine the collective meltdown if somebody else was singing that song and then Idina enters in the next scene as the all grown up version of Elphaba.
This movie, like Memphis and In The Heights, isn't happening for a long time, if ever.
The WICKED movie will certainly happen. It took musicals like Chicago, Evita, Sweeney Todd, and Into The Woods decades get movie adaptions, but I'd be shocked if the WICKED film doesn't happen within the next 5 or so years.

This movie has never even been green-lighted and I very much doubt Idina is sweating about playing a role she was a bit long of tooth for 11 years ago. By the time this goes into production, if ever, she would well be embarrassed to play a school girl, green makeup or not.
I can't help but do a big eye-roll any time anybody suggests that either Menzel or Chenoweth would ever play those roles on film. Whenever Broadway.com or whatever posts anything about a Wicked movie, there are inevitably a dozen people who comment like "OMQHG Idina and Kristin are OBVIOUSLY the only ones who could do it!!"
Yeah, they are 20 years too old for the part. Not happening. There are plenty of famous, talented, young females that could get butts in the seats.
^ Someone like, Carly Rae Jepsen?
