OMG...I was totally listening to the recording right now on my ipod walking home and BEING ALIVE came on and had to change songs cause I could not stand the vibrato. But there are other times where is voice makes me have chills in a good way!
Personally, I love his voice. It is so unique, and isn't just a "voice", it conveys emotion, not just sounding pretty. Granted, it won't work with many things, but he chooses his projects carefully enough that it always adds to the characterization and fits with the score.
I didn't notice the over-enunciation thing until I listened to Taboo. Wow... Every consonant is delivered in a way that would make my old choir director proud. Kind of drives me (a little) nuts though.

See, I think Being Alive is one of the songs that I find the least amount wrong with.
Leaving the vibrato out of it, I think sometimes he can sound a little bit nasally - I know that's not the right term for it. Does anyone else notice this?

I love his "Not While I'm Around." I just found it on his website and thought it was a really nice version of it.
Lol, I must be a real Raul fan-it's the vibrato and nasal sound which I love about his voice. Actually, take away those two factors, and what is left? A voice like so many others.

I agree - I love the uniqueness of his voice. I think it adds a humanizing touch to all of his characters. I mean, the man can definitely sing, but its not the case where it looks and sounds like a singers voice is just sort of tacked on to an actor, if that makes sense. I am so jetlagged, lol
sorry but he sounded awful in Taboo(better on the recording ), that stupid thing he kept doing with his voice bugged me(is that how he though Phillip Salon spoke??)
How did Philip Salon speak, in comparison to what Raul did with it?

Unless he massaged the English language into incomprehensibility, I'm guessing Raul made a misstep.
Seriously, I love how every time Raul goes guttural and gothic he summons this '...nengh!-drag-version-of-Peter-Lorre vibe. Hilarious.
Do people think he looks like a goat?
I really don't get it.
I think he is gorgeous and he has a wonderful tone. His voice would be absolutely perfect if it wasn't for the ear drum shattering vibrato.

Really? .. no, really? I guess your continued ignorance should surprise no one, but I'll help you out. Vibrato + healthy dose of throatiness = goat. Same reason Julia Murney gets called a goat girl.
So, for example, if Raul Esparza did a random duet with Shakira, it would sound like an entire irritated barnyard.
Man, we should've let him keep guessing.

I wonder how long it would have taken him before he assumed something obliviously prurient.
Considering Raul met Phillip Sallon before doing Taboo, it's not how he thought Phillip spoke, it's how Phlilip does speak.
Philip does not speak like that at all, ive met him loads of times on the gay scene here in the UK so i know what he sounds like.
He kept doing that awful clearing his throat sound in the middle of every sentence what made it really hard to hear what he was saying.
The guy who played it in the UK had him spot on
Raul Esparza sucks.
And I wouldn't have it any other way.
Well, I think Raul DID camp it up a lot.
I saw Company last night and he started the title song singing through his nose -- not the lovable kind of Raul nasal-ness, but that unbearable, "stop that now!" singing through his nose. Thankfully, he didn't keep that up.
He has a very interesting voice and the insane vibrato thing seems to be a trend with Bobby's. Dean Jones had it, Raul has it...
He didn't sound sick or anything - it was literally just the first line of the song.
I love his voice, and I think that musical theater is where people who have unique voices can take refuge, because it's not about sounding pretty all the time, but being conntected and conveying the text to the audience.
Maybe he's clearing his throat because it's unhealthy to speak like that and Phillip has just gotten used to it. I've heard the Taboo London and their Phillip just sounds so boring and bland. You couldn't tell any difference between him, Boy George and Marilyn. It's like they cast the show using bland boy band members instead of actual actors.
