Ragtime on The View today

Just a reminder. I'm guessing they'll be on towards the end of the show. Isn't it just Noll performing "Back to Before"??
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

re: Ragtime on The View today

Ah, I just logged on to post this. I'm a teacher and this is my first day of break to watch daytime TV.
Anyone know of any other scheduled performances on daytime this week or next?

Yay, beautiful performance and everybody there got two free tickets to the show!

It was okay. Kind of weird they weren't in costume. She sounded good.

Christiane did a great job. Kind of weird how they had the women's chorus choreographed just for this performance when during the show they are in the wings. And what was with all the reverb? She sounded like she was singing in an enormous cavern.

What did they sing? And...not in costume? Strange...

I would suspect there was some reson that they were not in costume as Whoopie made it a point during the introduction to say they would not be in costume. For me, as good as it sounded, they didn't need the costumes. Liked the set recreation.

My guess would be that they weren't able to get the costumes over in time or something happened to one of them. I thought it was great, but the beginning had a huge echo that was distracting. I hope this does the show well.

That would be wrong. They made a conscious choice not to use them.

re: Ragtime on The View today

I guess it would be strange that if the ensemble was up there to not have them in costume. But, I have seen Broadway performances in the past that were on daytime TV and were just one or two people so they didn't have them in costume.

Two that come to mind right away were Kelli O'Hara and Harry Connick Jr. when they were on there for Pajama Game and recently D'arcy James did a solo version of Who I'd Be for Shrek.

I FEEL LIKE I'M TAKING CRAZY PILLS!!!!

Am I seriously the only one who can't stand Noll's performance in this show?? Let me say I'm a big fan of hers. I've loved her for years but in this show, in that role...no. "Hell, No!", as Miss Sophia says.

Even watching her on The View today where she thankfully toned it down, you could see it was like a tenth grader performing in her high school play. She sings and acts as if she just signed up for a drama class and has no training whatsoever. Honestly, I've seen this revival 7 times now and every time the audience goes crazy for her and I have no idea why. Is it just one of those roles/songs you feel you "should" get excited for, no matter how it's performed?

Someone please inform her that there is not a period at the end of every word in this song (I. Was. Your. Wife. It. Ne. ver. Accrued. To. Want. More) and that when making sure the end of every word is heard clearly (iT never accureD to wanT moRe) is a mind bogglingly bad and annoying choice.

Jordan - I have to disagree with you.

I actually wasn't a big Christiane Noll fan going into this production, but she definitely changed my mind. She brought a slight sense of humor to the role that I found charming. And at first, I thought her voice was too contemporary for the role of Mother, but after seeing the show I think that her voice suits the role quite well for her interpretation. I think that Christiane really allows you to see the arch the character goes through and the growth Mother experiences through her marriage, taking in an unwanted mother and child, the temporary "loss" of her brother, and the new found love she finds in Tateh. I found her performance refreshing.

I am a big fan of her performance in Ragtime.

But, this is only my opinion, of course. Everyone has a right to their own.

And maybe "temporary loss" is the wrong way to address the fact that her brother disappears, but I didn't know how else to word it haha

Christiane is poor man's Liz Callaway, just like Linda Eder is poor man's Babs. Case closed.

I really enjoyed Noll's performance, but I'm not sure she's quite the revelation many are poising her to be.

re: Ragtime on The View today

I just think this role is "too big" for her and that's the best way I can put it. To me it feels like she's reaching for it as hard as she can for 3 hours and never quite grabs hold. I don't like to compare performances to the originals but if you watch Marin it's one of the greatest things you'll ever see from start to finish. This is just at the complete opposite end of the spectrum sadly.

re: Ragtime on The View today

I do agree with you there, Jordan...I don't like to compare performances to their originals either, but Marin's performance was absolutely sensational. Can't be topped.

re: Ragtime on The View today

Jordan I find your analysis remarkable since I find EXACTLY that problem with Mazzie's performance where she labors every available syllable. I don't find that with Noll, in fact, some of the criticism of her performance has been that she's too modern in her presentation, not as traditional a singer as Mazzie, that some feel is more befitting the character. I don't find that a problem and I appreciate the ease with which Noll sings.

re: Ragtime on The View today

For whatever it's worth, I'm not over the moon for Noll's "Back to Before" sung out of the context of the show. In the show, however, I found her performance charming and was so invested in Mother's journey that her "Back to Before" was quite effective.

re: Ragtime on The View today

Even though I find Marin's vocals to be superior to Christiane Noll's Back to Before, I still believe Noll plays an amazing mother night in and night out! I honestly believe she deserves the Tony for this. This show touches so many people, and she is a huge part in that process. I find her to be remarkable... and wish her the best of luck at the Tony's!

If Noll gets a Tony for this, than we'll know that the Tony voters were the same people who gave Obama his Nobel Prize.
