Once isn't that far ahead of the rest, Nice Work has 10.....
I wish more musicals got nominated for Best Score. I know that Ghost, Leap of Faith, and Spider-Man weren't the scores from Gypsy or anything, but...stupid plays have to ruin the "show tune" category...Maybe, Alan Menken will finally win a Tony.
And maybe with this, Leap of Faith will be open until Tony weekend.

Look at FELA! and MEMPHIS. FELA! received more nominations, but MEMPHIS took the overall award. ONCE is by no means in that much better of a position to win Best Musical.

James Earl Jones got a nomination for being himself.
Was Frank Langella's performance nomination worthy?
I hate to sound so naive, but many of the comments here confuse me even more. Tell me again -- does "best musical" mean 'best overall score, lyrics, and book' -- the written page, essentially? Or does it mean "best production" of a musical? If it is the former, rather than the latter, then I really don't get what the lack of nominations in other fields has to do with a show getting best musical nomination or not.
The same could be asked about "best play". While One Man, Two Guvnors is perhaps the BEST production I've seen on Broadway in ages, I'd be hard pressed to say it's the best written play by a longshot!

nice work if i can get it for best muiscal boo it's all old songs like crazy for you
I can't believe Tyne wasn't nominated. Granted, I didn't see a lot this season, but I thought Master Class was one of the most magnificent things I've ever seen - obviously due to her performance.
I hope Other Desert Cities takes set design.
With these nominations I would not really be surprised if Porgy and Bess pulled an upset over Follies at this point. What is really persuading me is the Best Director category. Thoughts?
Can someone please explain Elizabeth A. West's nomination for Once to me? I saw the show this past Saturday... being a huge fan of the movie, had some directorial issues (why was it set in a bar? Because all Irish people are alcoholics?), but enjoyed it overall. However, she did not stand out to me at all... at least not any more than the other members of the ensemble cast. if there was a standout, it was Anne Nathan. Any thoughts?

We have a code blue, code blue at the St James Theatre. (Paddles are placed on the patient)...ALL CLEAR...(Tony nominations announced)...we have a pulse. It is weak. Put "Leap of Faith" in the intensive care unit. Maybe someone will talk them into a DNR?

I don't see a point. Look at every other year for the past decade. Nothing is a guarantee, but Once is certainly the front runner...

but...stupid plays have to ruin the "show tune" category
But it's NOT a "show tune" category. It's called BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (MUSIC AND/OR LYRICS) WRITTEN FOR THE THEATRE.
Guvnors was shut out! Too bad.
Leap of Faith for best musical? Never going to win but what a waste of a slot. Bonnie and Clyde was better. Heck, I would have even thought Spider-Man over LOF. Even Ghost!
Melissa Van Der Schyff was amazing and should have gotten a nom also. Happy to see Da'Vine Joy Randolph's name up there though.
Once got what it deserves. By far the best on Broadway right now, no matter the ticket sales. I'm routing for that show.
I think Bernadette, Paige, Lansbury and Daly were all robbed... Shame.

Can somebody explain to me why that ****fest Leap of Fail got nominated for Best Musical?
At this point, the Featured Actress in a Play award is Judith Light's to lose, with Linda Emond possibly sneaking in.
Her name is Elizabeth A. Davis. And I took her nomination to be the Tonys way of recognizing what an incredible ensemble ONCE has. The same way they recognized De'Adre Aziza for PASSING STRANGE. And if my feelings are right, her nomination is more than well deserved. She may not have been anything incredible, but that ensemble, altogether, was pretty astonishing. It's nice to see her get recognized at least, since the Tonys don't have an Ensemble category.
And as far as the set being a bar, it makes complete sense if you were paying attention to the show itself. It has nothing to do with Irish people being "alcoholics"...

Patash, look at the best play from last year - War Horse. Everyone on here said that it was not the best written, but was a great production (I didn't see it, just remember the discussion) so I guess going off of that it is best production of a play/musical (but don't quote me).
Please correct me if I'm wrong!
I wouldn't want to be around The Raul this evening.

To the poster who complained about Josh Young's nom because he had so many missed performances, I'd like to remind you that he was legitimately SICK. He's been doing this role for well over a year between Strat & La Jolla and his attendance has never been an issue until he contracted laryngitis. SO happy for him. Well deserved. And good to know that the Tony Committee isn't as unforgiving as some of you are.
Extremely happy for Laura Osnes! Well deserved!
Emma ... either they were trying to keep other shows out or they saw something most of us didn't. I would go with the first guess.
Hey ctraill, I wasn't complaining. I was just surprised because he missed so much that a lot of talked about how maybe the nominators didn't see him. No need to jump down my throat.

Since when are screens consider a set (looks at GHOST).....
And I feel there needs to be a rule in place that you can't be nominated for BEST Musical, Play, New or Revival without being nominated in another category....
