I think that deal may have been made awhile back and was already pre-sold. I think Sony has an interest in STARZ! That's why they put together that On The Set special and had that special film retrospective where they screened several films that were adapted from stage shows the night that RENT opened. I'm willing to bet that it's also going to be exclusive to STARZ first.
bustinloose you beat me 2 it. A friend of mine works for starz and gave me the calendar. And as mentioned above the deal to air it in july came before the release, so it is not in any way because of the box office. So all those about to post about "not a good sign", blah blah, you are off the mark on this one.
I heard dvd april, but that is proabably just speculation.
I also think that sony/revolution knew that the real $$ will be in DVD and not at the BO. SO i am GUESSING that there will be an initial release spring time and then a special edition during the holidays. So they get the dvd sales in spring, starz can then air it exclusively, and then they can get all the rent heads to buy another special dvd with more content.
one more thing, bustinloose, 5 bucks playbill has an article on this in the next day. (but you should get the credit). hahah

Well that's one certain way to take advantage of and piss off the fans.
btw - was that Chicago special edition dvd ever released? I kept hearing about it and then heard something about a 3 disc set, but by that point I couldn't have cared less.

Alot of people need tou nderstand that when movies are made nowadays deals are cut and pre-determined such as DVD release dates, cable rights, network rights. All that stuff is worked out before the movie is even released to theatres.
a free calendar given out to clients/customers saying what movies will first air when does not scream out to me confidentiality! it's advertising. they want people to subscribe to starz! Updated On: 12/6/05 at 02:00 PM
It sounded like bustinloose was an employee of the cable company, not a subscriber, so I was curious. A calendar used internally for business/planning purposes may be confidential, but a calendar sent to subscribers isn't.

" then they can get all the rent heads to buy another special dvd with more content." - Am I pathetic in knowing that I would do that? I'll buy it the day it comes out - or preorder from Amazon so I just have to open my door. :) But I know if they repackaged it later I'd spend my money all over again.
You guys are so fun ... in my circle of friends I'm the "Crazy" one because I've seen the stage show 5 times. Around here, I'm lazy!
Well, if they released it in 1969, no one could have complained that it was dated! Of course, most of the cast would not have been born yet...
It's up on Netflix already too, but so is King Kong. I think they just put everything up there and just update it when they have an official release date.
and just think of all those other movies out there that have been "jaw droppers" at one time and are now on ABC Family or TBS or TNT as "a new classic!" Perhaps some day our Rent movie will be something that is on all the time like Dirty Dancing or Cutting Edge have been in the last couple years!
Ha. Rent on ABC Family. Kinda makes me giggle. But they showed The 6th Sense and is Rent really any worse?
Please note "December 31, 1969" is not the actual release date for this product. We are currently working on a fix and will display the correct release date shortly.
