This theatre needs to be renovated before something else goes in... It is an absolute dump right now.

The Cort certainly needs some work.
That said, Hangman is a play that deserves a shot on Broadway.
Strategically speaking, opening a new play during the same season as Harry Potter is a really, really bad move.
And the Cort remains a dump.
A remodel of the Cort is coming.

Wish they'd bring back the new marquee. But I think Broadway could use another original play, and he's having a hot year with "3 Billboards" (as terrible as I thought it was). So makes sense. And I'd love to see the play. So bring it on!

While Harry Potter would certainly appear to be the frontrunner for the Tony Award, I would certainly never count out an upset by Hangmen.
1) The vast majority of the Tony Voters are well over 60 --- and really don't give a crap about Harry Potter (except when they're trying to get house seats for their grandchildren).
2) It's running at an ATG theatre --- which means it won't have the blocking votes of either the Shubert or Nederlander chains (or to a lesser extent, the Jujamcyn chain). Not huge blocks --- but enough to make a difference.
3) Potter won't be touring any time soon (if ever) --- so they won't automatically get the voting block of road producers.
It will really come down to a "vote your heart" type campaign (a la WICKED vs. AVENUE Q), and we all know how that one turned out!
It's funny that you use the touring argument, as if HANGMAN will have a massive national tour.
And I don’t get why they think harry potter wouldn’t tour.
They've been super protective of the show - they give out pins that say "keep the secret" - etc, so I'm not sure they really care about touring around and making all this money. They know they'll make their money. I mean look how much time and effort they spent on turning the Lyric into something. And Harry Potter is an EVENT, so I think it's hard not to get swept up into the magic of it.
If this does happen, the Atlantic will have two transfers in the same season, which is great for them! Not that they can take much credit for Hangmen.
I always take Riedel with a grain of salt, but the fact that he has reported a specific date for their opening makes me slightly more inclined to believe him.

He doesn't provide a date, he just says before the Tony deadline. The May 11 date is for the next show at the Atlantic.
I know for a fact that creatives involved with the production were asked to keep schedules clear in April.
@Fordham yes you’re right, I totally misread that.
I think if Hangmen transfers, it could very well win Best Play. Harry Potter is a fun experience, but the script is lousy and it drags. Hangmen is a much better play, while Harry Potter is a stunning bit of spectacle. It would certainly make for an interesting Best Play category.
This is why we need a Best Book of a Play or Best Written Play Tony Award and if this transfers, it will be evident why. Cursed Child is everything the Tony Awards love big, splashy and a financial hit. It is bringing so much business to Broadway and it will be awarded partially for that reason. I also thought it was quite evident in 2015 when Curious Incident beat Disgraced. I loved Curious Incident, but Disgraced was definitely the better written of the two. I lost track of what I was saying.
Or War Horse... a stunning spectacle of a production, but a mediocre script and is practically not able to be produced *without* the spectacle elements. It beat Good People, Mother****er with the Hat, and Jerusalem.
McDonagh has never won a Tony. He's the Susan Lucci of the Tonys. Not even The Pillowman won. It lost to Doubt but I still think The Pillowman was far superior. I hope it transfers if only because I rarely get to see shows before they go uptown.

I like the Pillowman, but you really think it's a far superior play to Doubt???
Have to agree. Love them both, but the Pillowman has aged more favorably in my eyes.
Wow, maybe I need to revisit The Pillowman, but I really do consider Doubt to be one of the greatest American plays. I certainly consider it to probably be the best of this century so far and I think it's aged exceptionally well.
That being said, McDonagh is waaay overdue for a Tony and I could see them giving him the Tony this year over Harry Potter. Hopefully they'll award quality over commercial success.
It's nice that there will now be a bit of a race for Best New Play, but are the nominators reading the plays or just seeing them? I think if you're just seeing Harry Potter you'll be wrapped up in the production and no one will care for its faults.

I still think one of the strangest things to happen at the Tonys is "Beauty Queen" winning three acting awards and Best Director and then "Art" all of a sudden winning Best Play (for its only win of the night). So it would be kind of ironic if "Harry Potter" wins 6 or 7 Tonys and then all of a sudden they reward "Hangmen" with Best Play (not at all saying this is going to happen, but would be kind of funny if they did).
Well, I don't see Harry Potter winning any acting awards with Angels in America in the mix, as well as Iceman, Three Tall Women, and even Farinelli. I think Harry Potter is basically a lock for sets, costumes, and lighting, but not necessarily for play if Hangmen transfers, and certainly not in any of the acting categories. A lot of people, myself included, walked away from Harry Potter feeling that it was poorly written, overstuffed fan fiction, with a stunning design that justified the price of admission. Harry Potter will probably win like 3 to 4 Tonys and will maybe win Best Play.
Guess we should be expecting an announcement soon!
