I don't think it's that surprising. Nobody really cares about the Go-Gos or The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia enough to shell out Broadway ticket money to see a loose adaptation with the Go-Gos songs shoe-horned in. It's like investing in a musical set to the music of Debbie Gibson. I mean yeah, the Go-Go's songs have a bit more staying power, but not much more.

It is very strange that Paltrow didn't attend opening.

I know she has some new Netflix show that is in pre production but I’m sure she could have gotten the time off to attend opening night if she wanted. I actually wasn’t aware she was a part of the production team.

I'm sure that makes the investors happy..."
I would be... kinda really pissed if I was a creative/actor/investor and read in the post that my producers didn't know how to market my show. Jeff Whitty is getting the last laugh.
Maybe Gwyneth was really just wedding planning and will be there on a later date. However....not being at the opening of a show you are producing? Weird.

a musical with the music of Debbie would be heaven!
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Who's the target audience? I live in NYC and the fans of the Go-Go's are thinking they are getting a review and not what's on stage. A colleague (GO-GO's fan) commented that she Hated the show "story-plot"...and a lot of other things that are being presented on stage that I will refrain from sharing. Personally, Love the GO-Go's but we have no desire in seeing this show!
