Is "10086sunset" Riedel? He seems to post his articles a lot ...
"To turn that into the implication that he is someone ashamed or frightened by his sexuality is where the problem lies for me,"
Me too. It's incredible disrespectful and mocking him is really rude.
Now....back to the subject of the play....
This article, like everything Riedel writes, is quite simply false.

Watch his interview with Amy Sedatis. It’s classic “he’s being mean to you because he secretly likes you”

What a mess of an interview. Wow. That was such a strange thing to experience but I'm sort of glad I did.
It’s amazing to me that this board has gone so far off the deep end and fallen so far that we have posters defending Michael Riedel, of all people, as well as Broadway “Trump will be good the gays” Concierge on the OT board. Thanks, Patti Murin.

Nice post, adamgreer! Why defend the undefendable?
I’m by no means defending him - but I do love his trashy column - but I think calling someone a closet case - who none of us know is or isn’t - is rude and kind of goes against the point you all are trying to make.
The man has made a career out of reporting trashy rumors about Broadway. Why shouldn’t he be subject to a bit of his own medicine?
Because saying he’s in the closet is a jab insinuating he’s gay. Which then comes off as a diss.
Which is not what everyone intended. Sure he writes trashy theater gossip. But it keeps the community relevant and interesting.

Riedel is completely irrelevant today in the broadway community. whatever influence he may have had begin diminishing when he trashed Bernadette’s first performance in Gyosy, and today nobody gives a dam about what he has to say. Let him stick to commenting on right wing politics.

Yet here you are talking about him.

Riedel is pretty irrelevant. Some of us on this forum talk about him because we talk about anything theatre. He does nothing to reach out to the outside the truly obsessed theatre fan. He only reaches out to people who are already die hards.
Riedel is only now less relevant to us now that he's not on the theatre beat as much, but let's not forget he had a twice weekly theatre column, a weekly theatre show on TV, and a best-selling theatre book. He's arguably made a better living off theatre than most theatre artists. Also, let's not forget that as much as people like to pretend his articles aren't, a lot of it ends up being true in the end.
Like what, specifically? A lot of what he reports is unverifiable gossip.

Like when he reported that Christine Ebersole was going to be Bernadette’s alternate in that Gypsy revival because Peters couldn’t get through an 8 show week?
Or how about those lines around the block to buy tickets for Bullets Over Broadway?
I’m sure Riedel is loving the attention he’s getting in this thread.

The simple reasoning is that more times than not, the articles tend to provide good conversations and debate. Personally, I appreciate threads that discuss theater over the many threads that discuss who signs at the stage door or asking what shows someone should see when they plan to visit.
Riedel is one of the few who have actual, dedicate space to writing about Broadway, I wish there were more people doing the same.
The fact that hes straight has me so shook. It like, makes me hate him even more. I dont feel bad about bashing him; he's downright mean, catty and nasty. He's a parasite to the industry. He's a modern day Hedda Hopper.
This thread, about a Straight White Men article, has included personal bashes/callings out of the following: The moderators, one of the leads in Frozen, a poster who hasn't even commented on this thread, and Donald Trump (okay, maybe that last one is fair game).
But seriously though, this thread is bananas!
^^ Perhaps threads would stay on topic if this board wasn't such a dumpster fire at the moment. All of the things you mentioned have contributed to the current state of things around here. The board no longer feels like a community. And things will continue to get more bananas until that sense of community is restored.
Sorry, didn't mean to DP

We're talking about a guy who once wrote of Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark, "I’ve got my foot on its neck, and I’m having too much fun to take it off."
That's not journalism, that's unadulterated, gleeful malice.
