I sure hope this happens

I know that LuPone did some tapping in the last go-round of AG, but don't think that that aspect is the most crucial. A strong belt and a good comedienne is what's really needed, IMO. The dancing can be the provenance of the ensemble. If it's going to be Roundabout, inferior choreography will probably match the other aspects of the production.
Ed, I must ask, what other Roundabout shows have you found so mediocre? I know something like Sunday had a reduced orchestra, but I found everything else to be sublime. and, going back to the previous season, I thought 110 in the Shade was a wonderful production of an okay show.
or are the shows I don't see the problem?
I thought Reba was great as Annie, but her Nellie hasn't worn well for me over time. I think she can handle Reno, but I honestly don't expect her to come anywhere near Patti's portrayal.
I do think Anything Goes is the kind of familiar feel-good musical that's likely to do better than most in this economic environment.

I think I went into this before, but, what Roundabout did to Threepenny deserved a horsewhipping; except for Connick and O'Hara, Pajama Game was a mess; after a delightful production at Encores!, Roundabout presented a dreary and lifeless Boys from Syracuse; and the horror of its Follies was truly heartbreaking, particularly since it had been almost 30 years since NY had had a chance to view a "full" production of that masterpiece. I avoided 110 in the Shade altogether. Pacific Overtures was passably okay, Assassins somewhat better. Sunday in the Park was basically a transplant from London. I ADORE Pal Joey and the thought of what Roundabout may be doing to it makes me SICK and the mere mention of their doing Dancin' is enough to make me throw up.
fair enough.
I assume they wouldn't be using the revised Lincoln Center script? Or would they? Or would they create a new version? And who's going to do that, Kathleen Marshal? God help us all.
Why are we assuming Kathleen Marshall's already signed-on? I mean, really? We're jumping the gun much too quickly...

Rachel York played Reno at Reprise! in LA, so there is certainly room for more sex appeal in the role. Would love to see her "reprise" it on Broadway.
Beauty, belt, comic chops, AND tap dancing. Didn't see her in Anything Goes, but did see her in My One and Only. The girl can shuffle ball change!
I can certainly understand going with Reba, though. While not quite "right" for Reno, I think she will be very energetic and entertaining. She's supposed to be a former religious evangelist who has turned to nightclub singing, so I think Reba's country roots could be quite plausible. Her "Blow Gabriel Blow" could have a real Gospel feel to it.
And she'll sell a passle of tickets!

I don't think the Merm tapped, but that image makes me smile.
Reno is not a "dance" role and watching Patti fake the time step is also amusing.
Reba is fantastic, I have no doubt she'll do very well.

Do you remember when Forbidden Broadway took on the Lincoln Center AG (particulary LuPone)? It was hysterical. I love Patti, but that editions of FB has stayed with me forever.

Thanks for the reminder about Forbidden Broadway! Yes, Patti mumbling her lyrics. What a hoot.
Too bad it's not 10 years ago. Bernadette would have been perfect. Not that she couldn't do it now, but I believe the age range for the character is 30-50? At least she can legit tap.
Speaking of Ethel lol If Reba can't do any sort of time step, she can always just move her hips and arms in a pretend dance motion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zJ3vqkXqRU
McEntire is about as perfect for Reno as you can get.
The character needs a big personality with a big voice and charm to spare, and McEntire has all those traits and more.
To those who are questioning the solidity of Kathleen Marshall's involvement, she has been attached to this project for Roundabout for over two years. In fact, she was supposed to do it during the 2007-2008 season following THE PAJAMA GAME, but when GREASE came up and no "star" was interested (they heavily courted both Catherine Zeta-Jones and Donna Murphy,) the show was shelved.
This would be amazing.
She breathed new life into ANNIE GET YOUR GUN and I'm sure she'd be nothing less than stellar in this role.
Reba is a force. She'll blow it out of the water.
Donna Murphy is interesting, though,
Marshall though...eh. The Pajama Game was only so terrific because of O'Hara's terrific warmth and the electric sexual chemistry she inspires with her co-stars. (Not to say Connick was lackluster- he was great, but sexual energy is what drove that revival and it was O'Hara's terrific gifts that drove him crazy for her throughout the show.)
inlovewithjerryherman, I find it to be quite the opposite.
I have almost always found O'Hara to be as cold as a fish but with the extreme fortune of being paired with very warm and likable leading men to counteract her blandness (Harry Connick Jr. and Paulo Szot, for example.)

If Roundabout had any sense, they'd cast Meagan Mullally. Second choice would be Sara Ramirez.
Rachel York is a highly inspired, and she should be the first replacement. (she's gonna do Turn of the Century, though, let's be real.)
Mullally is so wrong for Reno it isn't even funny. Ramirez is interesting, though. Neither of them are sexy enough, imo.
that's interesting, somethingwicked. I feel that O'Hara has a wonderful amount of tangible warmth and naturalism in her acting that has inspired both of her biggest leading men so far, who were both green to acting, to be completely honest and truthful with her. to each his own, i guess.
Where is this idea that Reno needs to tap? Patti faked that s**t like no one's business.
Anyway, back OT, Reba will kill this s**t. and it's DUE time for a revival of Anything Goes, which is one of my favorite shows.
I think Reba is about as perfect for this role as could be. This is such a fun show, and Reba would knock this out of the park.
Reba was simply stunning in 'Annie', she really shot the ghost of the lackluster performance we got from Bernadette Peters!
Reba will rock as Reno- no problem!

I really love Reba, and I think she'll do a great job. My expectations have always been low before when it comes to her, and she's always blown them to smithereens. (And yes, I used to watch "Reba" religiously...)
And that's considering that I loathe country music.
Personally, I think Reba could be absolutely terrific in the role.
I've loved her in everything else she's done, and I'd love to see this revival actually happen. I won't judge in advance, but I don't see why she couldn't be great.
Though I'm not too keen on Kathleen Marshall, I'm going to go into this production with an open mind.
