All I did was post an article....not sure what I did wrong.
I understand this movie is unlikely to come to fruition, but I thought I'd just post about this. Maybe I'll end up liking it (we are talking about a film that does not exist)...maybe I wont.
She's too old for both, but I'd rather see her as Sally. Streep that is. I'd love Pfeiffer for Phyllis. I really want Vanessa Williams for Phyllis, but I don't usually get what I want. Streep and Sarandon?
Pfeiffer would bring so much more to the role than anybody else, I think. Plus, it's about damn time she got a leading role in a huge big-budget film that can really showcase her talents again.
Streep would probably be fine playing Sally if she were dubbed, but I don't think she can handle the music. Then again, I don't know if I can think of a major film actress who really could.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
She sounded better and Into the Woods thnt I ever imagined she would. I don't know if it was vocal technique or studio trickery but her voice has never sounded better to me.
Rob Marshall also said that even though "No More" was cut, there was dialogue that replaced it making the song unnecessary. So yeah, he's a blatant F'ing liar.
Well, I don't think Marshall blatantly lied, but he might have extended the truth *a little bit*. I remember he said that no CGI was used at all in the Transformation scene. However, it is obvious there were some CGI effects. Specifically at the beginning...what he meant was that there was no CGI used in the transition to old and ugly to young and beautiful...which I can believe.
I too did read where Marshall said that a fan asked if Streep had any help, and he replied no. However, I think *a little bit* of help was used on everybody, but for the most part it was Streep. She parts the Witch's Lament live, and she sounds really good on that. Streep also has a very pretty voice in Stay With Me. As far as Last Midnight is concerned, Streep was smart, because she didn't really belt it out and sing until the end of the song. Before that, Streep had a controlled whisper/talk-sing...which is something I could see her doing in a song like "Could I Leave You".
The Michelle Pfeiffer as Phyliss intrigues me...she is actually kind of...well, VERY perfect for the role. The only person I can see in the role besides Streep and Pfeiffer is CZJ, which I'm not quite sure of. Zeta-Jones was excellent in Chicago, but that was made around 14 years ago. And I will not judge her by her Tony performance since that was apparently an "off-performance", but from clips that I've seen of her in the role, sometimes she was really good in her songs, and sometimes she was "meh". I don't know. At least she can do the Lucy and Jessie dance.
I agree that Streep sounded wonderful in Into the Woods, but she doesn't sound like a soprano, and Sally's music is pretty high. Obviously, Sondheim could just alter the keys, but as written I don't know if she could feasibly pull it off even with help in the studio. I would kill to hear her tear into Would I Leave You, though.

I would rather want Kate Winslet as Phyllis and Amy Adams as Sally before I would have Meryl Streep, for I think she and Nicole Kidman would both be a better fit Carlotta than anyone else.
Kelsey Grammer as Ben and Nathan Fillion as Buddy would be really cool to watch. Plus why doesn't Rob Marshall just admit that FOLLIES is his next film already?

Exactly. She can probably sing Phyllis but I highly doubt she can sing Sally (well, at least). The odd high notes in ITW are exactly where Streep did not come out shining.
I doubt any film star in Meryl Streep's age-range will be able to sing the score well. Not that it has bothered Rob Marshall before (see, Daniel Day-Lewis).
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I think that Streep would be a great Phyllis. I would still love to see Bernadette play Sally as long as she fixes some of things that weren't great in her previous performance. She may not be a huge star, but most people still know who she is and Streep would already be the anchor star.
Keep in mind that the four leads need to be, relatively, the same age. And that age needs to be around 50 in consideration of when the follies ended. Sure, you can bend it a little but you can't put, say, Amy Adams next to Kellsey Grammer or Streep next to Winslet.
That's true. Luckily, Bernadette is Streep's age .
Who else could they cast next to Streep?
