Not really. You’re mentioning more of the opposites attract trope—where two people think they don’t even like each other at first but if you peel away the layers they actually have something the other person needs and they help each other grow.

They’re also the fantasy Schmigadoon is pulling apart on purpose. The show wants to say that those tropes are a fun fantasy but don’t work as real love.

Josh and Melissa, on the other hand, just felt like they’d been together a couple of years and he especially never really liked her or her interests and she just tolerated him and they both would have been better off just breaking up and finding someone they’d be happier with. I don’t feel the show ever gave me a reason to root for them.

This. This. This.  Otherwise I had a great time at Schmigadoon!

I thought he liked her. Josh's attraction to Melissa was certainly more than his dislike of musicals. This is why he never broke up with her. I see what you mean though that the show didn't give a reason to root for them since I was also surprised with the ending.

Of all the Best Musical nominees, this would have my vote, but I loved the TV show so that's not exactly a surprise.

I like the humour, the cast was spot on (Gasteyer has my vote for the Tony), the choreography and sets give such a charming view to this property and I feel like the parodies of these golden age musicals was more a reverency than anything else.

Does Josh and Melissa feels like a couple that I 100% want to root? No, but at the end Sara Chase was great and that's what counts.

Also: Max Clayton was robbed.

I didn't either, and I would definitely be very sensitive to that.

It's possible that the available promotional materials put too much emphasis on the wholesomeness of the Schmigadoon residents and the inanity of the main (presumably liberal New York) couple, which might give the impression that the show has a conservative vibe. The full experience at the Nederlander doesn't endorse that perspective at all, though.

I still haven't seen the musical but can't help getting very conservative vibes from all the promo videos and ads. Like some old dusty revival from the 50s. Maybe it's just me, but that's the feeling I'm getting. The style of the songs doesn't help either. I'm clearly not a target audience 🤷‍♀️

Well, what I meant to say is the show itself doesn't endorse any conservative vibes you may get from the promotional materials. Of course, if they're calibrating those materials to try to appeal to conservatives, that says something not very flattering about the producers.

The production obviously is appealing to those that idolize the Golden Era of Musical Theatre which may appeal to conservatives I guess but, some of the themes of the show are more liberal such as being tolerant and true to who you are so I think your point is incorrect.

I've said twice now that the show itself doesn't endorse conservative values. I'm not sure what point your disagreeing with.

No, the show where a character is named "Mayor Manlove" and the villain is an overbearing judgemental church lady out to make everyone as miserable as she is doesn't endorse conservative values. The lack of media literacy in the world, and the willingness to come on a message board and post about it, is sometimes astounding. Just...do a google search. Read a review. Watch 10 seconds of the tv show on youtube. C'mon.

Schmig has its flaws but being MAGA coded isnt one of them. There are two closeted men who are warmly celebrated when they acknowledge their sexuality, and the MAGA-ish character is the villain. Titanique is obviously very gay-coded, but in terms of actual political positions, Schmig is without question the most overtly "liberal" new musical this year.

So, if you bothered to read my message, you'd noticed that I've mentioned that I watched many videos available on YT trying to understand what the show is about. I've read the reviews and no, I'm not watching the TV show to convince myself to buy a ticket. Maybe the proucers should understand that their marketing makes people perceive the show as conservative leaning. It's also clear you've learned the phrase "media literacy" without understanding what it means and now lecturing people on the internet with valid questions about the show. Good day.

You are literally the only person I have encountered online or offline who perceives any sort of conservative theme or undertone in Schmigadoon’s marketing.

if you think the big splashy musical that is an homage to musicals, and spun off from a tv show  made by well known liberals, all with overtly LGBTQ storylines, is somehow messaging conservative MAGA vibes--thats a you problem, buddy.

Between the quasi-plagiarism and most of the score being written for another medium, I really hope this doesn't win Best Score. Give it to Two Strangers or even Death of a Salesman.

Am I mistaken, or did they remove an Ann Harada scene that was in the Kennedy Center production which addresses her difficulty, and then acceptance, of her husband's sexuality?

And it join's TRW's catalog for licensing which will position the musical for new productions in more than 60 countries worldwide. In North America,  rights are expected to be opened for professional, regional, amateur, community, and school productions, including editions made especially by Cinco Paul himself specifically for middle and high school students.

So, we have the tour announcement to coincide with Tony voting going on (as most shows do around now... see The Lost Boys and Titanique)... will the announcement of a cast recording be coming next?

For me this is the rare musical where Act 2 is better than act 1. I think what act 1 needs is for Melissa to fully sing earlier. Sara Chase has such an amazing voice and her act 2 reprise is the best moment in the show. If she got an I want song I think the whole show would work better.
