"I suspect it hasn't dated. "
It has.
Frankly, it was overpraised to begin with, and this new production makes its shortcomings all the more evident. All those "Cats" put-downs really seem lame now. And the shrill, obnoxious college students are absolutely impossible. The staging is more overwrought than incisive.
The piece now seems a little shopworn.
I attended the second preview. I agree that Corey Hawkins' portrayal needs the most work. I think Allison Janney is wonderful.

They weren't relevant the first time. Nor were they either clever or funny. And they're even less so now.

Saw this tonight. Some interesting moments where things really work, but the piece as a whole has not yet congealed into a satisfying night of theatre. I am not sure whether or not it will.
I agree. I caught it on Saturday and thought it was too talky. Not enough emotional connection. Wouldn't recommend unless you are a Janney fan.

Saw this tonight.
So incredibly boring and outdated.
Has anyone rushed this show? Where are the seats? How is the line?
I also saw the show last night (with a rush ticket), and I have to disagree with the last few posts. I thought it was great. I think the cast is pretty fantastic, with Janney being the obvious standout. The only times it felt dated to me were when certain supporting characters used some less than palatable turns of phrase to describe Paul. That felt a little icky. But otherwise, I thought the whole thing stood up pretty well. And I have to disagree with After Eight: I found the Cats references incredibly funny.
As for rush tickets, the seats are in the boxes (which are totally fine for this show... though I was in the house right front box, the seat closest to the stage. I only missed the upstage left corner, but legit nothing happened there. Some stuff DOES happen upstage right, so the boxes on the other side MIGHT be a problem.) I got there yesterday at 9:55 am and was third in line. The first girl had apparently been there an hour, but the woman in front of me got there about 5 minutes before I did. Now, it was a Monday show, so perhaps there were fewer people out and about since most shows don't have Mondays. Or perhaps you could argue that even with limited options, the short line makes it seem like rush will be easy. For what it's worth, though, the theatre was mostly full with the exception of the rest of the boxes, which were fairly empty.
Oh and also, I would expect to see this nominated for scenic design of a play. Maybe lighting design as well.

THANKS to everybody for posting their thoughts. I'm certainly not NYC-based so I'm literally hanging on your every word. On INSIDE ACTORS STUDIO, Stockyard Channing had some interesting thoughts about this play. Essentially, she said it was a odd piece to read as written on the page. She told James Lipton she made a conscious decision not to worry or fret -- fingers crossed the play would "work."
An analogy she used was apt. She said Guare's script is like a toy spindle & once it gets working up to speed, the audience sees something written on the sides.
That said, I loved the movie except for Will Smith.
The Hustler is played by James Cusati-Moyer. His understudy is Mickey Theis.

That is a WONDERFUL drag name.
Did anyone else watch THE CATCH-UP talk on Broadway.com with ANDY KARL and ALLISON JANNEY?

Their chemistry is amazinggggg... They should do another show together!! Hot hot hot
I will preface my post by saying that I knew absolutely nothing about this play before seeing it. I went in completely blind. That being said, I was so mesmerized by both the play and the production. The entire cast is absolutely great with Allison Janney being the standout. I LOVED the set and lighting design. I thought that pacing and direction were perfect and kept the play moving along quite well. The 90 minutes simply flew by. This is a powerful production of a powerful play. I highly recommend this.
Where's the best place to sit for the nudity? I ask because I am taking my grandmother so I need to be sure we sit far away from any nudes. Lol

I think no matter where you sit, you're getting an eyeful. I was in the front right box and I could see every detail lol.

Not much chatter on this, but I saw this last night and adored it. I was in the orchestra, but I heard from friends the rear mezzanine was nearly empty.
Janney, Hawkins, and the whole cast are perfectly cast. Trip Cullman did an excellent job with the pacing and tone of the play, which is really tricky. Truly enjoyed it. Gotta find a way to fit it into my schedule again.

Currently on the train from Boston - won the lottery for the matinee, so either I'm really lucky or just not that many people are trying to see it.
I'm not too worried about the mixed reactions here because I love Allison Janney, and really enjoyed John Benjamin Hickey on "Manhattan". Will report back on the seat location as I've only seen notes about rush ticket locations on the board, though I'm guessing it may be similar.
Update: Allison Janney was wonderful! The play was good, not life-changing but I didn't regret seeing it and it never really got tedious, except maybe a little bit at the beginning before things pick up a bit. My seat was Orchestra Left, Row P Seat 5 so towards the back of the house but not far off center.
