I still say SUNDAY is going to win the award...with its toughest competition coming from SOUTH PACIFIC.
So glad that great revivals are coming to Broadway!! (GREASE had me extremely worried.)

Agreed. I think he really captures the beauty of the show!
"There’s not an ounce of we-know-better-now irony in Mr. Sher’s staging. Yet the show feels too vital to be a museum piece, too sensually fluid to be square."
"It’s as if a vintage photograph had been restored not with fuzzy, hand-colored prettiness but with you-are-there clarity."
So happy for the great review!

Wow, I don't remember a review in which Brantley wet himself quite as throughly as that one!
This is well deserved praise for a superb production.

Posted: 4/3/08 at 9:18pmBart Sher may be looking at a Tony for this one. It's going to be a very tight race for revival. Out of the three (Does Grease count?) my gut is still going with Sunday, but this could very well win. And Brantley's writing this year has become simply marvelous. Even when he isn't gushing, I look forward to his reviews more than ever this year. Bravo!

"I must hand it to Brantley. That is a gorgeously written review."
That's the first thing I thought after reading it. He was able to do all the stylistic things he always does, but every sentence seems to serve a purpose, and he shares the essence of his expereince at the theater.
This type of writing isn't commonplace these days.

Posted: 4/3/08 at 9:26pmI think South Pacific AND SITHPWG are both heads and tails over Gypsy for best overall.. But South Pacific has won me over.. Just wonderful. And I'd pick both Kelli or Ms. Russell over Ms. LuPone for best actress.. Sorry, but it's true.. Had never seen Ms. Lupone on stage before this, and while it was cool to finally see her do her thing, the other two ladies are just so much more real... will be interesting to be sure.

Brantley: "I know we’re not supposed to expect perfection in this imperfect world, but I’m darned if I can find one serious flaw in this production."

Posted: 4/3/08 at 9:30pmThat review was, dare I say it, better then the one he gave for Gypsy.

Posted: 4/3/08 at 9:32pmI hope they take out a double-truck ad for this a week from Sunday in the NYT. It's been a while since a two-pager has been there, and this deserves it.

Posted: 4/3/08 at 9:33pmI sadly think SUNDAY will be forgotten by Tony time. and the race will be between SP and GYPSY. GYPSY definitely has the edge in the acting categories, and PACIFIC definitely has the best chance for best revival.

I have to say, I'm surprised by the raves!
I LOVE the production, but I truly thought it was going to meet some critical reaction.
The pace and some of the character development choices are questionable.
That said, I'm THRILLED! I've seen it twice, and have plans to see it again. And again. I love it. So am happy that the reviews are so strong!

I'm *thrilled* that Loretta Ables Sayre is getting such positive notices!
I hope both she and Danny Burstein get Tony Nominations.

Estatic to hear the positive notices! I am glad that the leads, supporting, and even ensemble cast are getting attention they deserve.
this season's revivals are FIERCE and i LOVE it. Honestly, all three (Gypsy, Sunday, and SP) are fair game for many awards come Tony night and deservingly so. The "best musical" category is going to be a bore compared to the revival category.

I saw "Sunday," "Gypsy," and "South Pacific" on my NYC trip at the end of March and, though I liked all three, "South Pacific" was the best revival by far. I found it to be utter perfection and hope it wins many Tonys.

So, he's written two glowing raves.
Does that mean the (expected, foreshadowed, called for on his board, I haven't seen the show don't yell at me) pan of CRY BABY will be titanium?

There's one for Gypsy in this Sunday's Arts and Leisure. It's quite striking.

I love Brantley's review, and couldn't be more obsessed with this paragraph:
"I could feel the people around me leaning in toward the stage, as if it were a source of warmth on a raw, damp day. And that warmth isn’t the synthetic fire of can-do cheer and wholesomeness associated (not always correctly) with Rodgers and Hammerstein. It’s the fire of daily life, with all its crosscurrents and ambiguities, underscored and clarified by music."
So true. And his assessments of the performances are spot on. Brava!
