STREISAND wants to make GYPSY

Streisand directing Menzel; would probably sell a fair amount of tickets

Totally. If by "fair amount" you mean 10 tickets.

I think it'd actually be a blockbuster for a while... then plummet quickly.

Idina Menzel is a a good VOICE actress. Stage and screen haven't really blown me away.

More like plummet immediately. Poor girl can't even fill a Broadway theater, you want her to be responsible for a musical film's box office success? She would have to be a screen star before that.

Richard LaGravenese Talks LAST FIVE YEARS, Bringing 'Gypsy' to the Big Screen & More!

In a new interview with Comingsoon.net, THE LAST FIVE YEARS director Richard LaGravenese talks about adapting Jason Robert Brown's off-Broadway musical to the big screen.

The director also gives an update on Barbra Streisand's long-gestating film adaptation of GYPSY and confirmed earlier reports that he has re-written the script after recently coming on board as screenwriter. He had previously worked with Streisand in 1996 on The Mirror Has Two Faces.

"Barbra [Streisand] and I rewrote it and it was great working with her," he tells the site, "and I think she's going to be an amazing Rose, so I hope it comes together."

I for one can't wait to see Streisand in Gypsy.
She doesn't look a day over 50.
And it is said that 70 is the new 50!
She didn't even look fifty in the Guilt Trip.
She certainly looks younger than Roz Russel when she did Gypsy.
(i love Roz Russel; this is not a dig)
Barbra will knock it out of the park.

Only kidding! But it isn't Barbara Streisand, it's - you know, the other spelling.

I just want to see the script. The script will either give me confidence it's headed in the right direction, or brace me for the worst. These days, you can erase every line on your face and tweak every note in your range, so even if Barbra isn't perfect, we won't know the difference. I just want to know it's a good adaptation.

^Exactly

It needs to be an excellent adaptation to FILM...it needs to be creative and cinematic! But...it needs to do so without compromising the story. (read: Chicago, Into the Woods, etc.)

When can we expect a trailer? With Jupiter Ascending?

I don't care how great the script is, this should NEVER happen.

I don't care how she looks. She is a 73 year old woman and she carries herself like a 73 year old woman.

There's nothing tragic about being 73. Not unless you're trying to to be 50. To paraphrase a famous line.

I pray to Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha and Moses that this never happens.

STREISAND wants to make GYPSY

I have nothing against Streisand. I don't think this is necessary.

1. There are already 2 film versions: Rosalinda Russell and Bette Midler

2. This is already considered to be one of the most perfectly written pieces...how can any rewrite even try to remain as close or true?

STREISAND wants to make GYPSY

I want a decent adaptation for once. The show deserves it. The Russell and Midler versions were both fairly mediocre mainly because their leading ladies were miscast, but also because they felt stagey and cheap. There are many ways to open up the piece and make it feel exciting, but no one seems to want to try.

I'll wait until I see a script. I'm not thrilled about Streisand in the role. She looks great for being in her 70's, but she's still in her 70's after all and I've never seen anything to make me believe she'd be able to pull off Rose. Singing wise, yes, but she always seems to play a version of herself, so unless she takes off the nails and roughs herself up a bit, I'm not buying it.

"..."takes off her nails" They are 100% real and she will never cut them. ever. she has had those nails since the beginning...."I grew my nails so I couldn't learn to type.." So,if we see a Streisand hand without nails - that, in and of itself, is worth the Oscar.
#49

STREISAND wants to make GYPSY

i LOVED the Midler version. at this stage in her life-Streisand should keep her glorious voice silent here.

A 73 year old playing a mother in her 40s

As Jon Lovitz would say:

" That's why they call it "ACTING" "

I had the same issues with Meryl playing the 40 year old hippie mom in Momma
Mia, and got over it...Pierce Brosnan singing still stings...

I guess the more musicals make it to the big screen, the better...

Trying to think of other 40 to 50sh great actress big box office movie stars that can sing their faces off to play the part and everythings coming up "no roses"
