I don't care how old she is, but just make it happen already. Also, since when is GYPSY a "gritty," "realistic" show that requires that kind of treatment? The subtitle is a "Musical Fable" for God's sake.
Also, all press at the time of Laurents' death indicated that he was eventually fine with Streisand in GYPSY and that it was Stephen Sondheim who was being difficult about it getting made.

If Streisand's artistic respect and personal affection for the material remain this strong, she might be wiser to put on her director's cap and film another actor in the role. That would take guts and integrity: to put her stamp on the material with a brilliant directorial interpretation -- the painstaking attention to perfection she's so known for -- rather than subjecting her audience to a performance delivered at least 15 years too late. If she coached a bravura Rose out of another actor, it would be a stunning third act achievement for Streisand.

Definitely not. I attended four of Barbra's 2012/2013 concerts, and the voice was still there.

"It's not necessarily the same exact story.. Maybe rose dies and the grandmother comes into the picture, uses the grandkids to get famous.. It's not unrealistic or unreasonable; just don't think remake, think more based on.. It's a fable after all."
You're right, iIt's not unrealistic or unreasonable.
It's ridiculous.

Naive to ask, but does anyone with a tangible connection to the industry have any verifiable information (as opposed to Twitter and Instagram posts) that this project is genuinely going forward? If all of this flurry of attention stems from one old interview with LaGravanese and a couple of posed pics at a dinner party, I'll sit back and wait for more reliable evidence of a film actually happening before I get all excited.
For instance, has a director said yes to doing this?

I don't know Someone, but I have a cyanide capsule at the ready. I concur with Henrik that the whole notion of Streisand starring in the part is "ridiculous". Even Ethel Merman--who tried to play Annie Oakley at 57--never tried to play Rose after her early 50s. And that wasn't with close-ups!
And I don't know where Streisand keeps that voice that can belt Ethel Merman songs. She certainly didn't have it with her at the Village Vanguard 6 years ago!

I wouldn't be surprised if it's true that she had secretly recorded these songs before. I'd imagine the beltier notes in Coming Up Roses and Rose's Turn would be supplemented with the rumored "secret recordings."

Honestly, if Babs had wanted to do this a while ago, I could possibly see it. But now? Does she want to be director or producer? Because I can see that working. But I can't see her actually being in the cast of the show. Don't get me wrong, she's super talented, and she has a great ear for music in general, like if you listen to any of her remade versions of songs she's recorded, she has an amazing talent for changing the melody or the notes and using vibrato on the consonants rather than the vowels... But, maybe she should just direct or something (if this is real).

Streisand as Rose is literally the worst idea I've ever heard in my entire life.
Kirk Douglas they're gonna have to get to play her father.
Who are they going to get as Herbie? Hal Holbrook?

This thread is rather like reading a Peter Weiss play: a complete unraveling into insanity of the demented musical theatre mind. Secret Tapes? Who recorded them? The Little Grey people?

Presumably she recorded them.
Anyway, She shot her entire performance on film in 1987 and has been waiting for technology to catch up so that she can seamlessly integrate it into the rest of the footage to be shot later.

I'm told that David Lynch is now directing this . He agreed to do it under the condition that the film be shot on an iPhone and lit by only a single 60 watt lightbulb following Barbra (who will have no makeup at all) from underneath her. He wants to give it an honest, gritty feel that the story has never had before.

If Babs wants to play Rose, I suggest she trot over to London to see Staunton first. The idea of her doing this role is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Yeah it's pretty stupid. It's not like she can sing or act or anything. I mean when you think about it, there really has never been a dumber thing ever.
