Is Kathleen Turner too old to play June?

I have my heart set on Ed Asner as Herbie and Jessica Lange as June.

If Ed Asner is Herbie, then the only choice for June would be Mary Tyler Moore.

It all depends on Betty White's schedule since she'd (obviously) have to play Mazeppa.

So if we have Ed Asner, Mary Tyler Moore and Betty White cast then we have to find suitable roles for Cloris Leachman and Valerie Harper. Georgia Engel can be a "Hollywood Blonde".

Leachman is Elektra! Harper is Mazeppa!

All we need is James L. Brooks to direct and it's a go!

This seems more and more likely. My question is this. If Streisand is never able to get her film to fruition how long until we see a film adaptation of Gypsy that is worthy of its place in the history books of musical theatre or will it ever come to pass? I mean her option on the rights will have to lapse at some point but by that point all of the hubbub surrounding her project may well diminish any interest in a film remake. Which could be just as well. As much as I love Babs I don't think this is the project for her to get behind and there isn't anyone around right now (that Hollywood would allow to take on a role like Rose) that gets me excited enough to warrant a remake. Maybe some new talent will come along or a starlet will age into the role and in 10 or 15 years we will get a film worthy of the material.
I can think of a few names I'd like to see onstage as Rose if it would ever wind up back on Broadway (Donna Murphy or Tonya Pinkins). I think Bebe Neuwirth would be an off the wall choice but something tells me she could be great. Maybe at a regional theatre somewhere? Another off the wall choice that could go either way... Faith Prince. I think she would need a strong director to keep her from camping her way through it but I believe she cold really be something special. Megan Mullally is someone else I'd like to see in the role. And Victoria Clark. Not in her vocal range necessarily but the woman could pretty much sing anything and is an acting powerhouse. So what I'm getting at is I'm one of those people who want an annual Broadway revival of Gypsy lol

Anyone who loves American musical theater should be very dismayed by this "news". The implied casting of Streisand's fellow waxwork John Travolta makes it even worse.
There's nothing wrong with being 74, unless you're trying to act like you're 35. There are already two subpar movie versions of Gypsy, do we really need another? This one promises to be the worst of all. This will make Lucy's Mame look like goddamed West Side Story.
Methuselah they're gonna have to get to play Mama Rose's dad.
Stop this madness.

This.
She looks damn good, could pass for 50's so that's close enough for me. She doesn't have to jump cartwheels for the role so I'd love to see her give it a shot.

I would love to see Barbra take on GYPSY. I don't really understand all the complaints about age. She won't be the first, or the last to play the role - not even on film. If Judi Dench wanted to make a movie playing Hamlet I'd go see that too.

Her voice is shot to hell, and though plastic surgery, she may not exactly look 74, but she comports herself and has the aura of an 'ahem seasoned citizen.
This gonna be a gigantic disaster. Oh the humanity.

I don't care how old she is. I love Babs. One of the greatest talents in a long time. I truly hope this film is made

No worries. By the time this finally gets around to being made all the theater queens who love GYPSY to the nth degree will be dead and no one will care.

Really, you don't think she'd be the last to play it on film? Excatly how many times do you think it would be filmed? Gypsy already got one remake. Not many musicals manage two film versions let alone one. In reality, IF this film gets made, Barbara will likely be the last one to do it on film. If this does not get made, then Bette will likely be the last to have that honor.
Let's be honest, Hollywood isn't exactly clamoring to bring 56 year old musicals to the big screen. Without someone to help bring in an audience, it is simply too big of a gamble. It may already be too big of a gamble even with Barbara's name attached.
If Ms. Dench made a film version of Hamlet, you'd be sitting in that theater alone.

You've said this "joke" many times in numerous threads. We get it, you don't want Streisand to make the movie. If you're going to make a comment with a joke like this, the least you could do is make it funny.

Isn't the bigger concern that the very aspect that's most exciting -- a visceral, grounded, go-for-broke take on the character by an actor with innate skills for the range/requirements -- would be undermined by all of the trickery to handle if not outright disguise her age? Even if it's not Lucy-Mamed, the shoot could end up with Streisand's lighting so self-consciously designed to keep her out of the glare of an unmerciful lens. And "Gypsy" requires that lens -- scrutiny -- not pulling back to Cleveland, to quote "Tootsie," or shooting though linoleum filters. To work in 2015, it will need something far gritter than, say, even "Annie", dirty floors, the omnipresent threat of dire poverty realistically suggested. To gussy it all up again in technicolor trappings will undo the very premise of Streisand's being cast.

Art Laurents is gonna roll over in his grave. His dying wish was to not have Barbra do Gypsy. I guess whoever is tending to his estate is selling him out. Pity.

Babs voice isn't what it once was, but in a musical with studio recording she should be more than fine,.
As to gritty reality, have we ever had such a musical on the screen?

With the todays technology, she will look and sound like 35 years younger. All you haters will be joining me in the theater on opening day. It's filming this fall for Xmas 16 release.
