STREISAND wants to make GYPSY

Just because she can sing and act doesn't mean she's right for every role ever written.  A Momma Rose she ain't.  Dear World, maybe.

You're right. I must have missed the part in the press release that said she was going to play every role ever written. I thought it was just one. My bad.

Streisand should do no more than produce it. Have Mike Leigh direct Imelda Staunton. AnnE can play Louise. And Meryl can cameo as Miss Cratchit.

Jordan Catalano said: "Yeah it's pretty stupid. It's not like she can sing or act or anything. I mean when you think about it, there really has never been a dumber thing ever."

And it's even dumber because her wanting to do this is clearly holding up the long, long line of all the other people in Hollywood who are just beating down the door to Arthur's crypt to get ahold of the script for their own film versions.

Even if it was a suitable role for her, which it definitely is not, she's 20 years too old for it. They'd be shooting her through an acre of gauze and she'd massacre those songs. Dreadful.

Her voice is a shadow of its former self. I saw her sing a couple of years ago on TV and is was clear that the arrangement was designed to help her manage every single note. The soaring spontaneity of her voice of old is gone and will never be recovered. No one sang like Babs in the 1960s. NO ONE!!  But, now?? She shouldn't be allowed within a continent's length of that brilliant show unless she is the one who puts up the dough.

This thread is so ridiculous.

Every single one of you will be first in line on opening weekend.  So shut up.

No, I'd probably wait a couple weeks and then catch it at the first showing of the day for cheap at the AMC on 34th

If she were to do it it would be the most self-serious performance imaginable, just like most Barbra post 1975 or so.

I would go with a group of gays and throw Goobers at the screen, and make fun of her the entire time.

Here she is, boys! Here she is, world! Here's Rose!

LOL! Best12 that is classic.

I pray to Jesus this DOES NOT happen. Barbara needs to keep her old, long fingernailed mitts OFF Gypsy.

Saw Barbra live in Brooklyn and Toronto in 2012, Amsterdam twice in 2013 and the Voice was there. Of course it has changed compared to decades ago. So yes, age has taken some of the higher notes, but her middle range is still there - and then some.

Nobody can phrase as Barbra Streisand can. Sinatra could. But Barbra's interpretive skills are without peer.

Bring her on, Mama Rose.

it's Oct. 1 and still no "official" confirmation.  Travolta justgave an interview to EXTRA...

John also confirmed rumors of a possible “Gypsy" remake, sharing, “Well, yeah, I mean Barbra wanting to do ‘Gypsy' for years, and she’s been developing it, and I think she always visualized Gaga as Louise and maybe me as Herbie.”

If this were made I think the results would be more fascinating than good. and maybe a little grim.  It would also, almost certainly, come out as a television movie ala' South Pacific which starred Glenn Close.  The original feature, by the way, was not only good but perfectly cast  with Natalie singing everything undubbed.

The thought of John Travolta ruining another movie musical is scarier than Barbara doing June and Louise's Great Grandma Rose. If you want to see a truly awful performance, watch Mr. Revolting ruin "Hairspray".

I agree that the original movie version of Gypsy is good. Two things made it very flawed though. That Godawful voice over they had Roz Russell do. The other problems is Russell's singing voice. If everything else were the same and they'd let Merman do the movie, it was be an all time unquestioned classic.

I agree with this. Call me biased but Natalie Wood was born to play Louise/Gypsy, she lived with a real life "Mama Rose", she knew what it was like to have a tyrannical stage mother thrust you into the spotlight at a very young age. The 1962 movie shines because of her.

This is going from bad to worse. Apparently, Babs wants to completely destroy musical theater's crown jewel and she'll succeed brilliantly.

She should star in "Ballroom" with Tom Hanks. The score is mostly by her supposedly good friends the Bergmans. It's poignant and the role is age-appropriate. Sarah Jessica Parker can play her daughter.

Do you know what happens when you let Veal Prince Orloff sit in an oven too long?

Right. Wood's transformation is very believable too. She is truly plain, and then becomes truly gorgeous.

I remember catching Gypsy on the 4:30 movie on ABC when I was 7. They showed it in two parts over two days and I was enthralled. I remember telling my mom that I HAD to see part 2 the next day. (How did she not know I was gay??)  I had no idea it was called Gypsy, or what the hell it was. For years and years I would refer to it as "that movie with Baby June". It wasn't until I was 18 that I found out what the movie was and the show's importance.
