Actually, Adam, the lyrics aren't as garbled as you might think. I found the German lyrics online, and they're very true to the original lyrics. I think it's odd, though, that the title in German seems to be "Sweeney Todd: Der Teufelsbarbier von Fleet Strasse" (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, literally), but in the lyrics they sing "Sweeney Todd, der Barbiers des Grauens von Fleet Strasse", which is Sweeney Todd, the Barber of Horrors of Fleet Street. Both have the same amount of syllables, I don't know why they don't just stick with one translation.
ETA: You can find the lyrics here:

Todd's wife is not dead in the Arden Thea. production.

Catie and Mythus, thank you so much for posting the info. about the show. Mythus, yours was very detailed and I totally get what you are saying about the alternate meaning of "Asyl." It doesn't make sense to me.
Liz_, do you or does anyone know if this is actually based on a true story or am I reading that incorrectly? Thanks.
The only German I know is Marlene Dietrich, but I enjoyed the pictures.
((shiver))
Mea culpa Mythus, mea culpa.
I guess when you say not for the squeamish you mean it...ewww. I'm one of the most squeamish people I know. I'm ok though (deep breath). I really want to see the revival, so I guess I need to get used to it. Elyse. No day but today.
Elphababuff2: Probably not. It's a folk legend, so no one's sure. Look at this website. For another take on Sweeney, find the T. S. Eliot poems "Sweeney Erect" and "Sweeney Among the Nightingales." (Warning: It's Eliot when he isn't in Old Possum mode.)
No, I'm not really this obsessed with Sweeney, I just wrote a paper on it a while back and a friend wrote his thesis on Eliot.
Sweeney: True or False?
Beautiful pictures. Mrs. Lovett is really pretty! I can't wait for the revival.
Liz_, wow! Thanks a lot for that link. I have never even heard one song from SWEENEY TODD and now thanks to that history, I really have become interested in it. Who knew barbers and surgeons used to be considered similar industries? I never realized it, but I had always wondered where the barbor pole stemmed from. Kind of morbid, now that I know. That is such a crazy article. Really, I appreciate the link!

My god...vulgar production. I agree with MagictoDo, I began singing "At the End of the Day" after seeing the asylum pic.

While fantastic photos, the purist in me is gripping that Mrs Lovett is way to pretty. She is supposed to be scary-freaky with only traces of a long-lost beauty, not looking as gorgeous as the lady in the photos is looking.
Oddly enough, the opening night for my production of Sweeney Todd was the same day as a London newspaper first posted a story about a barber named Sweeney Todd murduring a customer. I forget how many years ago the paper came out and I wish I had a copy of the article, but it was rather creepy being told that 10 mins before I went on stage.
Wonder why they look so young? Because it's highschol, damnit. And we somehow pulled it off.
[Edit: Gone.]
A mostly accurate Sweeney synopsis, from the City Opera...though I'm not sure if Sweeney had actually finished his prison term, and I don't remember some of the Fogg's parts.
Sweeney Summary
Hey Necromancer07707, that looks like a marvelous production. I wish I could have seen it. Any audio clips?
I like the look of this Lovett. It's Judith Christin in Lyric Opera Chicago's production.
Royal Opera House production.

thibodeaux, for the sake of all those who have no seen or heard Sweeney Todd before, PLEASE EDIT YOUR POST! You just gave away practically the entire plot, which I was trying not to do.
ETA: And no, Liz, as far as I know Sweeney never finished his prison term. Pirelli says that he was sent to Botany Bay "for life". When Anthony mentions that they found Sweeney on a raft, it's inferred that he escaped.

I want audio clips too! Erm, please.
I thought so, Mythus! The City Opera should hire me (or you) to do their plot summaries. :)
