Short version...
There's this barber named Sweeny Todd. He's a little cracked, and he likes to kill people while they are being shaved and then hide the bodies under the floor.
His wife..(can't recall her name right now) chops up the bodies into meat pies.
So there's more...but that will at least explain the photos.

Thanks WiCkEDrOcKS for posting the photo. Thanks Plum for your help but I still had trouble.

I've ALWAYS wanted to see a bloody production like this. Usually the blood is just a trickle. This is how it should be done!

In the upcoming revival, is there any stage blood used? I seem to recall that it's suggested with red fabric? (oh brother!)

I don't mean to be a bitch but it's not Sweeney's wife. Just his accomplice who is in love with him but he does not return the feeling.

Uh, CatieElphie1...have you seen Sweeney Todd?

Sweeney Todd is about a barber named Sweeney Todd (originally named Benjamin Barker) who returns to London to get revenge on those who wronged him, specifically Judge Turpin, who transported Sweeney to Australia (to jail), raped Sweeney's wife, and then took Sweeney's daughter as his ward after Sweeney's wife poisoned herself. He sets up shop above Mrs. Lovett's Meat Pie Shop (Mrs. Lovett is not his wife, just someone who recognizes him as Benjamin Barker), and begins killing his customers, getting "practice on less honorable throats" in anticipation of killing the Judge. Left with bodies (well, first, only one body) and nothing to do with them, Mrs. Lovett (whose meat pie business is doing badly) comes up with the idea to bake the bodies into pies.

I'm sure I could be less in depth, but...yeah.

ETA: And those pictures are freaking awesome. It's odd that the sign says "Fogg's Asyl". I translated an abridged version of Sweeney into German for a project, and the German teacher suggested that I change "Asyl" to "Irrenhaus" (crazy house), as Asyl means asylum as in sanctuary. At least, that's what she told me. Very curious.

Google translator says "Asylum" when you translate "Asyl" from German to English.

Yes, I know what Asyl means. I speak German. I said, "Asyl means asylum as in sanctuary". Asyl still means asylum, but - and these are my substitute German teacher's words, she's from Germany - it usually means asylum as in sanctuary or shelter, and not like a crazy house.

This is a production of the Komische Oper Berlin from 2004. The text is a very detailed plot summary. The quotes at the top say "Crime by corrupt public officials, parasites of society, have happened for thousands of years. Also, in our time, these crimes are rarely punished. This book is based on a true story from the city of industrialization in the 19th century." -Armand Eilles. The second one, the Brecht, says "Subject of the investigation is human beings." And yes, Asyl means asylum. Fogg's Asylum, if you've ever seen Sweeney, is the madhouse where Judge Turpin hides Johanna, so I think the meaning is pretty simple here.

Yay, I'm glad my German is useful sometimes.

Wow, I bet it's awful translating Sondheim's lyrics to German... or any language of that matter. To me, it would be losing part of the Sondhiem beauty in the show.
