I saw last night's preview. Laura Shoop stepped in for Laura Benanti last night and for today's matinee. I didn't cancel my ticket because I'm seeing the show again and I was curious to see the understudy do the role. She was good, but it will be interesting to contrast her with Benanti.
With Laura's illness, I'm curious about how that effects the critics. I always heard that critics go to one of the later previews. I thought last night's possibly could have been a critic's night, but they couldn't do that if the star wasn't present. Or could they?
Anyone know when this show might have been seen by the critics? Tonight perhaps? Laura's supposed to be back. But, bronchitis is a tough disease for a singer to have.
Press performances were held over the weekend, and Laura was in for them.

Last night was not a press night but tonight is.

I think Andy Karl would have been a better fit. I thought Gavin was fine, but something was missing. I kept going back to when Sebastian La Cause played the role at Arena Stage several years ago. I preferred Sebastian's performance.
What about Creel's performance was lacking for you? Is Kodaly typically more easily pinpointed as the "villain?" Despite the hurt Creel's character causes some of the others, I still found him very likable throughout. If the character was supposed to be more sinister, I can see how that might throw off the balance of the piece. This production marked my first time seeing She Loves Me, which is why I'm asking.

I know it's s minor point but I thought his moustache was distracting. I also felt he was fine but not spectacular. I don't think he's supposed to come off as a total villain but he seemed a bit mild for my preference. He also seemed a bit young in the part.

Gavin is 39, so I'm sure he'd be thrilled to hear you say that. He was just playing a 19 year old until recently.
CupidBoy2, he didn't come of smarmy enough.

I think the mustache is to make him seem smarmier, honestly.
That's definitely a fair assessment. Based on some of his past roles, I can see why Andy Karl has been mentioned here a few times.
Seeing the final preview tonight and I hope Laura is feeling better. While I would love to see her, it'd be understandable if she had to back out again but seeing as it's a press night anyway, as someone mentioned, maybe she is determined to get at least one more performance before opening tomorrow.

She's back tonight. You would never know she was battling bronchitis vocally. She did drink a glad of water right before ice cream. But It worked for the scene.

Well obviously. Maybe it was THAT mustache that was distracting..it was too wide for his longish face and yes I know as noted earlier he is 39, but he still seems very young and a little too modern than the role calls for. I can't say he didn anything that I didn't care for..and last night's audience loved him. To me, it's more of a casting issue than a performance one.

I was there last night as well and thought Gavin was really embracing the sleazy aspects, even more so than the second preview I saw. I didn't think I'd accept him as a creep but he was wonderful.
I saw the show last Friday and I echo what other posters have said so eloquently about the show. It's the equivalent of eating your favorite meal with your favorite people. It's sweet, charming, and comforting. Roundabout has hit a home run with.
I saw the staged reading Caramoor did a few years back and I've listened to the original and revival recordings, but seeing a fully staged performance just made it. The show succeeds in all areas, really. It's not trying to be something it isn't--it works because it hasn't been changed to being set on a Martian colony just for the sake of trying to be different. It's genuine. I can't really think of what else to say other then it's such a satisfying show.
The cast is tight and precise. I found the 4 leads to be outstanding. I easily see 2 or 3 acting nods from the cast. Laura Benanti was amazing and I loved every second of seeing Jane Krakowski (Sadly, when I saw Nine, she was out). Zachary Levi was great and I really think if he up and decided to never do TV or film again, he could make it in theater. And Gavin Creel does no wrong in my book. Ever. Dude could sit there and eat a ham sandwich and I'd cheer.
If I only had one word to describe the show, it would be charming. It's lovely show being executed at it's best. I've seen all the revivals this season, save the TBA Shuffe Along which I'll see right before Tony noms, and this, in my eyes, is the new front runner for revival. I really enjoyed the SA revival and thought The Color Purple was done the way it was always meant to be, but this is just such a great example of how to revive a show well. It's a must see.

What, in your opinion, gives SLM the edge over TCP. I've heard the latter is amazing!!
I've heard they're both amazing actually. What, in your opinion, gives SLM the edge at this point?
I'm planning to see this show in a couple of weeks, and I've seen there are mezz seats left. I've never been inside Studio 54; how is the view from the front and rear mezz? Would you recommend it? Thanks!

Well that's embarrassing. I just saw the photos from opening night, and it's his real mustache...obviously grown for the show. I kept thinking it looked so fake on stage and was afraid it was going to fall off or tilt over. Oops...

After those reviews, and for a birthday present for my partner, I ran to the computer last night to see if I could get tickets for this weekend. I doubt it will be at TKTS anymore (as it has been at 40% off) and I couldn't afford that anyway. I found a discount in the last row of the Rear Mezz. I just went with them.
I've been up there before (for Pacific Overtures) and don't remember it being that bad. Anyone there more recent than that who can report if these seats are really going to be the pits or not?! Thx!
(My partner never worries about these things and always says that he saw most of the Boston musicals out-of-town tryouts from the Balcony and never had a problem. But I always worry about the seats!)

It's not a great reason, but I think SLM has the classic advantage. It's not as much of a classic as Fiddler, for example, but it's fairly beloved in the theater community. Because it felt like a triumphant return, it felt like a complete production where nothing is lacking. TCP has one of the strongest individual performances I've ever seen with Cynthia Erivo, but SLM edges it out for me by just a hair.
The past several seasons we've had some outstanding revivals. Looking at SLM and TCP alone--not any of the other great revivals this season--it's basically an embarrassment of riches. The talent is stupid good and the amount is ridiculous.
Need help on seating:
I'm trying to buy Hiptix Gold ticket, and the date I want to see the show only has side orchestra tickets for Row F and after, side mezzanine tickets for row AA-CC, and central mezzanine tickets for row DD. Which one would be better? and if I go with side orchestra, should I choose left side or right side?
Thank you!
Saw it yesterday and thought it was pretty wonderful. Wasn't so sold on Creel, but everything else was perfect. Jane Krakowski is a goddamn firecracker.
I saw Krakowski when they had been performing the show for a week during previews and she was enthralling. I can't imagine what she must be like now that she's settled into the role. What a treat!
