The statement was made in another thread about how Young Frankenstein will most likely have four former Tony winners in its opening night cast (Roger Bart, Sutton Foster, Shuler Hensley, and Andrea Martin).
It got me wondering which show or show(s) holds the record for boasting the most former Tony winners in its opening night cast?
This would obviously not include performers who won their first Tony in the particular show or after the particular show. For instance, The Producers had three former winners in its opening night cast (Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, and Roger Bart) but two other cast members won Tony awards later for their roles (Cady Huffman and Gary Beach).
Put on your thinking caps all of you theatre historians!
RAGTIME, maybe?
Probably not.
Hmm.
I am pretty sure that Ragtime only had two former winners in its opening night cast (Audra McDonald and Judy Kaye).
Brian Stokes Mitchell didn't win his Tony until Kiss Me, Kate a few years later and Marin Mazzie, Mark Jacoby, and Peter Friedman have all yet to win Tonys.
I know. I just thought about that. Oh, well.

I have come up with some shows that had 3 actors in the cast who had won Tonys before the show opened, other than YF, I couldn't think of one that had 4...
WICKED
Kristin Chenoweth
Joel Grey
Carole Shelley
CHICAGO (Revival)
Bebe Neuwirth
Joel Grey
James Naughton
Noises Off (Revival)
Patti Lupone
Richard Easton
Faith Prince
I'm sure they are tons more...
Marcia lewis in the Chicago revival also had a Tony. That's 4 for that.
According to IBDB she has 2 nominations with no wins...
Marcia Lewis
Awards
1997 Tony Award® Best Featured Actress in a Musical
Chicago [nominee]
1994 Tony Award® Best Featured Actress in a Musical
Grease [nominee]
you're right. I need to do better fact checking.
Let's see...the original "Forum" had Zero Mostel, David Burns, Ron Holgate and Jack Gilford -- but I don't think Gilford ever actually won a Tony, so that's till only three.

HENRY IV (LCT Revival)
Kevin Kline

Audra McDonald
Well, the producers had Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, and Roger Bart.
When Idina won, wicked got 1 more Tony Award, with a total of 4
After Kristen Chenoweth and Rogar Bart won for "Charlie Brown", they joined B.D. Wong, with 3 Tony Awards
"Inherit the Wind" has at least 3 in the cast I can think of off the top of my head.
DEUCE had a total of 5 Tonys for the cast of two. (Four for Angela and one for Marian.)
(I know it doesn't really count, but oh well.)
If we went with this criteria, however, any show with Audra, Angela or Boyd Gaines would certainly climb the charts...

It doesn't count if they won their first for that specific show.
Who is the 3rd in Inherit the Wind? Plummer and Dennehy are the only two...

I love how nobody reads the original post. The Producers was already cited as an example, and we are spcifically not counting shows for which people won a Tony during that show.
MTVMANN is right about Inherit the Wind though, with Brian Dennehy, Christopher Plummer, and Denis O'Hare.
Re: INHERIT THE WIND...
Denis O'Hare also has a Tony.
The Coast of Utopia had 3:
Richard Easton, Jennifer Ehle, Brian F. O'Byrne.
Ah, I thought of one with four people who had actually won Tonys before the show: "Waiting in the Wings," with Rosemary Harris, Barnard Hughes, Dana Ivey and Lauren Bacall.
eta: Make that five, because Elizabeth Wilson was in the cast, as well.

Dana Ivey has never won a Tony.

Ehle won in 2000.
Haha! Woops! I did read it. But I was searching ibdb, and I came to THE PRODUCERS.
Ehle won in 2000 for "The Real Thing."
Coast of Utopia therefore had 3.
Oh, crap, you're right. I was thinking she won for "Ballyhoo." But that still makes four.
"Let's see...the original "Forum" had Zero Mostel, David Burns, Ron Holgate and Jack Gilford -- but I don't think Gilford ever actually won a Tony, so that's till only three"
Actually, 2. Mostel and Burns had Tonys when Forum opened, but Holgate did not win it until later. Jack Gilford never won a Tony.
Well, I wished Dana Ivey would have won this year, even if it was a Tony Award for her "collection of work", since it was noted that it was a weak category and the Ehle won partially because she was the first name on the list in the category.
