No copies in Virgin Times Sq today. The dreaded Colony had a few copies at $43 a pop. Whats it being sold at in the 'real' world?

The Suggested Retail price is $28.95, but the average price (IF you can locate a copy) at places like BestBuy, Target, Wal-Mart is around $19.00-$21.00. Borders, FYE, Virgin Megastore and Barnes & Noble have it at the Suggested Retail price.

I'm sure lost of clueless tourists are paying their $43.00 price tag without a blink. Poor fools.

I'm sure no tourists are buying this, since half of them don't even know what Broadway is.

Just ordered mine via Walmart.com for $20.87 using their "Ship to store" option (which is free). I won't get it for about two weeks but it's worth the wait!

Coloy Music is SUCH a ripoff.

Did anyone in NYC check to see if the Drama Bookshop is carrying it?

I found many of the critics to be quite wrong. Saying how Avenue Q was going to last only a few months and "couldn't find an audience"...as well as them panning Wicked...both shows that they hated the most are doing the best lol. I did agree with the women who said Taboo deserved another chance though. I don't know, none of them really liked anything. Boy George is right when he says they are destroying theatre. No one goes into the theatre and picks apart all of a shows flaws. They shouldnt anyway...its too expensive lol. Go in with an open mind, sit back, and enjoy re: ShowBusiness DVDs

Best Buy. They had plenty at the 5th Ave Best Buy for 19.99. Bought mine there last week.

WaltSummers, I bought mine at J&R's website on Thursday and it was $16.99 then, too. Maybe it was a sale last week. It just shipped today, so I can't wait to see it.

Thanks... it's a fun DVD. The commentary, with the director and Alan Cumming and Jeff Marx laughing every time Michael Riedel is on screen is hilarious.

I ordered my DVD ahead of time from bn.com. They sent me a delay e-mail. I canceled my order with Barnes and Noble and changed it Amazon. Finally got it today. I'm not finished, but so far I loved it.

Now, I just have to decide whether to keep the Actor's Equity Hair recording that I purchased to get free shipping from bn.com.

So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?

I don't think it is a well made documentary to be quite honest. As a theatre fan, I adore the film immensely. As a fan of documentary, I think it isn't well constructed and is a little loosey goosey in it's narrative.

I think the critics come off as complete trolls who sit around and nit-pick shows instead of doing anything constructive. I agree with the previous poster who states that Boy George is on the money with his comments about critics destroying theatre.

I love the extras and Donna Murphy's interview chokes me up. God Bless Her.

My question is: How does Michael Riedel get invited to ANY theatre parties and why is he even welcome in ANY theatre circles? Is anyone even actually nice to the man? His soul must be black from all of his hatred and bile. He's a waste of air.

What exactly IS Riedel? I mean, is he considered a critic?

I also loved Boy George's comment about critics destroying the theater. Obviously it's a blanket statement, and not true in all cases, but in some, it's definitely spot on.

the picture of Boy George and Riedel alone was worth the price of the DVD

My problem with the Docu is that it seems to ignore why Ave Q won and fails to mention that after they won, they broke their promise to tour. It also fails to mention Caroline started off-Broadway and does not include the Esparza/Rosie fight that I know for a fact was filmed.

Seems like a really long Ave Q commercial to me.

My comments posted from another thread:

I was interested enough watching it, and thought it was [fairly] well done.

One thing stood out glaringly though... both the bitchy (truly irritating) critics at that table, and the documentary's entire "point" itself, seem to say that "rave reviews" and "a Tony win for Best Musical" are what it's all about for a musical. Without them, your show is dead.

...and they're completely wrong now. Wicked got neither, and is the biggest hit on Broadway in the past 10 years.

And they never bothered to correct themselves, or to point out that they were and are, now and forever, WRONG in saying you can't make it without critical praise and a Best Musical Tony win.

The truth? Broadway audiences care less and less each year about those bitchy, lousy critics lording over absolutely no one at their self-important table, and that ONE BIG TONY NIGHT that the documentary keeps leading us up to with great anticipation.

Average people generally don't CARE anymore about either.

And the documentary should have pointed that out, in the end.

It is kinda lame when the film's main point is undermined by truth.

Best12bars, you are absolutely correct. I agree completely. Broadway is "dead" in the sense that the critics don't really matter except to many old people who still read papers. Most folks get info from the internet, etc. (Which is a whole other filthy animal to be discussed in another documentary.) Most word of mouth has hit the streets long before a review is written. I think reviews are read just out of curiousity about what the people say. However, once a few long standing "name" critics are gone, I don't think there will be new ones. They are no more "celebrity" critics being born.

I liked the documentary but it did gloss over alot of things that did happen and could have added some depth to the piece. I think it tried to cover too many shows and then would veer all over the place. All in all, I am glad it exists, but I dont think it adds much to what most hardcore theatre fans knew. It does however have great footage of a lot of great actors.

Plus, Alan Cumming kept popping up adding his two cents (since he produced it), yet he wasnt connected to any of the featured productions. Some of the interviews felt odd and hap-haphazard. I don't think the director had a clear idea of what they wanted to say.

Actually, the documentary does mention that Caroline transferred from off-Broadway. It might have been in the commentary but I do know they did mention it. Also, about Avenue Q touring, in the commentary, it is mentioned that they already knew they were going to Vegas but did not mention it because they knew it would upset a lot of people. They do not mention that they had made a promise to tour (I did not know they had done that?).

Really? People on these boards post and discuss reviews from the papers all the time. Unless you mean it doesn't really "matter" in the long run of a show, which I agree with.

And I also agree about Alan Cumming. He's listed as a producer, but when you're watching it, it's like "wait, what show is he from?"

I do believe that Broadway critics influence attendance still, to an increasingly diminished degree, and a Tony win for Best Musical will keep a show running for a little while, just out of basic curiosity.

But neither is a deal-breaker anymore. And neither spells "Broadway Victorious" for a show now.

It's been coming on for quite a while, going all the way back to shows like Hair and Grease having "mega-hit" phenomenal runs, that didn't snag a Tony win, and garnered mixed (at best) reviews.

The whole documentary's approach seemed outdated and basically incorrect. It's bad enough they said it once, but the whole thrust, point and shape of the doc is to "get to Tony night!"

And why would a doc that was so RECENTLY produced only mention the Internet once, in passing, by one of those bitchy critics who said, "Oh, let's not even get into THAT."

Why? Guess you're a little nervous, huh? Because your "magic powers of influence" have been hugely diminished by the "average folks" out there? Those causal word-of-mouthers, who can now give their intimate, spoiler-filled, detailed, water-cooler opinions for literally the ENTIRE WORLD to read?

Boards like this one, and the bloggers at large, have changed everything now. So has youtube.com, with endless bootleg clips of shows before they even open. And long after.

So, that doc would have been great!... if it came out in 1965.
