My question to BSo: Why was Lennon over for everyone after Marcy's "Woman is the n* of the World"? Julia owned "Beautiful Boy", Terrence's "I Don't Want to Lose You" never failed to bring me to tears, Will did a marvelous job with "Woman" and Julie's "Grow Old With Me" was mesmerizing. Your comment makes me think that what someone (I believe it was munkustrap) said is true: that all anyone cares about on Broadway today is a loud, high belt. There so many ways to sing and sound wonderful, as Lennon showed. "There are as many kinds of love as there are hearts," to throw a little Anna in the Tropics in there.
"It's not for sissies, contrary to popular belief." - Tommy Tune, on musical theatre.
I don't think any of these singers are really belting. I think it's a mix, but their voices are so very strong that it sounds like a belt. And that's the way to do it. I just don't think they could do a real belt 8 times per week without killing their vocal chords. Just my opinion.
SOME people ARE just natural belters and it doesn't strain them at all. Sharon Brown who was Lucy on the JH tour..was a PURE belter. and she never missed a show..(until she got double pneumonia...) but she never missed a note and she could BELT it out from her chest 8 shows a week. it was quite something!
overthemoon - Marcy owned that song. Vocally. Emotionally. Her energy was not rivaled.
Julia did a great job with "Beautiful Boy" - but face it, the song did nothing for her. It was a quiet moment. Marcy had a whole lot of energy.
Remember, the song begins softly. And I knew right there Marcy was going to own it. Her presence on that stage, IMO, was unmatched in the second act.
I still put Marcy and Chuck at the top of the list. It has nothing to do with "belting" it has to do with energy and stage presence. Plus, the fact that the song is one of the better songs in the show.
In terms of real belt I would say old school Liza Minnelli, Maya Days, Kathy Brier, Stephanie Block, Orfeh,...I've heard them all get up there (Es, Fs, Gs...in full chest...crazy high belts I tell you :)
Lisa May, I agree with your statement. You can tell when classical training has been studied and APPLIED. The belting technique is a trained and practiced form, and these ladies do display the technique brilliantly. I especially like Stephanie J. Block. Her tones come through clear and vibriant.
Eden Espinosa (I dont think I spelled that right??) Idina Menzel Lisa Brescia* Sharon Wilkons* Carol Linnea Johnson* Sherie René Scott Sara Ramirez Keli O'Hara* Hugh Panaro Raúl Esparza
I'm Sure I could come up with like another 100 but I just dont have time =)
I agree that no one today can top the classic belters like Merman, Garland, Minelli and others from that era.
Though I think Patti is a bonafide amazing belter of today. Her GYPSY is going to be amazingly belted. Her belt is just unmatched by these performers worshipped by the teenies.
