There are a lot of things that cause a crack. Usually the performer is doing something wrong though. But it happens. Cracking is your voice's way of trying to free itself. I've been in Operas where it's happened.

No matter what anyone says, as soon as we're talking high Fs, there MUST be some mixing going on -- no one's chords could handle it otherwise. We just aren't pysiologically able to do that. Some people throw more head voice in, and some throw more chest in, but it is still a mix.
And, for those who say Eden's voice is gonna be trashed, I think you'll be surprised in ten and twenty years, when she can still do it. She mixes (much like Patti Lupone), and will always be able to. Her belt technique (even if you don't like her tone) is pretty flawless. And as such, she saves her voice quite a lot of damage.
I'm so surprised at how little Alice Ripley appears on this list. And I'm even more surprised that people would actually say she's not a high belter.... F's aren't high belt? She gets up there with the best of 'em. Not to mention the 8000 E's she had to belt in side show. Take another listen. This is one our greatest high belters.
-Broadwayboy... who was hoping she would have been cast as Evita in London and is now hoping she will do it on Broadway...

Touchmeinthemorning, I couldn't agree more.
Mixing is an artform. It is learning how to put enough chest in so that it has that belt quality, but is still safe. Doing this isn't "cheating". It is singing, not screaming.
I can't believe that Adam Pascal hasn't been mentioned yet-- the top of his range is incredible. He makes the C/C#s in Chess look easy.

i am with touchme and michelle...good posts!
"I can't believe that Adam Pascal hasn't been mentioned yet-- the top of his range is incredible. He makes the C/C#s in Chess look easy."
Yeah, but they sound like sh*t. Grovelling at the top of your lungs and hoping your throat doesn't explode isn't belting (or even healthy singing). You want high C's and D's, look no further than Philip Casnoff.
Oh, and wouldn't Chase, Wilson, and Morrison just be considered tenors? I don't know that I've ever heard any of them go exceptionally high.

"Belting" for a singer, to me, means being able to carry a sound at loud volume, and generally a high note.
So if a soprano can belt, why not a tenor?
And I have heard Morrison, Chase and Wilson each sing very high notes with great vocal support and volume. Amazing, in fact.
So how do you choose to define or limit the term "belter?"

thats a good question...
i don't know that i have ever heard of a MAN being called a belter...

Yeah, but they sound like sh*t.
You've got to be kidding me. I realize that I'm incredibly biased, but I honestly don't see how one could say that Pascal's "Pity the Child" (and his high note in "A Taste of Pity," for that matter) sounded like sh*t. Preferring Casnoff's PTC is one thing, but I can't fathom someone saying that Adam sounded like sh*t, either.

Kelli does a great Idina impersonation.
She sang LITP with some belting once. It was weird.
And what I think some performers listed here do is sing opera - not belt.
Just because they can sing a note with power doesn't mean they are belting. I think Maria Callas would bite off some of your heads if you said she could "belt." (Though I wonder if she could....)
Patrick Wilson in MONTY singing the last note of MAN.
Raul Esparza has an awesome belt. I cant stand edens live, it sounds like screaming to me. Non broadway i cant get enough of Patti Labelles belt! I dont know how she does it.

And her Judy Garland album!
Linda Eder's Judy Garland album is the best thing that ever happened to my ears and I am PROBABLY not exaggerating.
I love that woman.
Carolee Carmello has an INSANE belt...especially on the Infinite Joy track "I Have Found" she hits that E like whoa.
