Sheila Hancock was on Paul O'Grady this arvo, and she mentioned that they have "female designers, a female director and a mostly female cast." Who is this mystery female show doctor and why isn't she credited on the website yet?
I think I just mentioned she's Caroline Brewer. She won't be credited because, among other things, Paul Schneider controls the rights. It's customary for a show doctor to go uncredited- see above.
I believe Anthony van Laast- a very experienced old pro- did a lot of work dragging this show onto the stage. From what I hear, it has his signature all over it!
Its Carline Brouwer - she's credited on the posters and in the programme as Associate Director. She's one of Stage Entertainments head honchos in Europe.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
'Praise the Lord', London is going to have a big hit on its hands with what I witnessed tonight, like many of you I was from the New Testament and was probably the biggest Thomas the Doubter for this show, no I didn't have to stick a finger into Jesus, I just simply had to go to the Palladium and boy was I converted.
Brilliant sets, costumes and casting, I heard of Shelia Hancock and assumed I would of seen her many times, reading the program notes, it became apparent I have not seen the her before, she was sublime, also Katie Rowley Jones as Sister Mary Roberts, she stood out when she done the solo, 'The Life I Never Led', this brings me to the lead Patina Miller what a voice, what a diva! Alan Menken and Glenn Slater music and lyrics are awesome. I did not notice Julia Sutton, hard to reconise her in all those habits, teach me to sit in the heavens.
A lot of people on here, including me said The Palladium would be too big and this delight would be suited for a smaller house, OK I was very wrong.
I was going to wait to see this show when it became available on tkts, The Palladium was a virtual sell out tonight with an electric atmosphere, I think I would of had a long wait for this to become available for half price at Leicester Square.
Simply the best new musical London has had in 2009, can imagine this going to Broadway soon, it be a transgression if it didn't!
Oh lord have I been forgiven for doubting this show, Amen.
I was in the upper circle (heavens), apt place to sit in such a show, I was in G38, the view was generally good an you will enjoy yourself, you are more central than me, which is a bonus!
Good to see all the positive feedback on this. I saw it on it's original run in LA in November 2006, great little show then just needed a bit of tightening up i thought.
Saw its London incarnation on Wednesday and wow what a difference. Plot wise its fairly similar with the second half seeing most of the changes, and also most of the song changes are in the second half too. The stand out songs raise your voice, take me to heaven, fabulous baby, and how i got the calling are pretty much as where. Sister act was originally a completely different song - a duet between Delores and the Mother Superior, and i did slightly prefer that to the new version.
The biggest changes come with the set of course, it was effective but fairly minimal in LA definitely not something you could say about the London staging, Wow! Got quite giddy from all the stuff flying around everywhere, and the black and white scene is amazing.Costumes too where stunning, i've never wanted to dress up as a Nun so much in my life :)
In terms of cast i think Sheila Hancock is spot on, Patina as got a stunning voice but i do think the role works a little better played a bit older so for that reason i would say i preferred Dawnn Lewis in the role, but that's a bit of nitpicking. Overall what was a great little show is now a great big one, and very enjoyable at that.
It was all but sold out and we ended up with slightly restricted view on the side of stalls, which was a bit disapointing initially after all the talk of top price tickets for £19.50! But it in no way reduced the enjoyment. the audience absolutely loved it and it's clearly gonna do well.
The original production in the states was a mess but from the sounds of it its found its feet (i had a huge problem with Act 2 so its good to see thats where the changes have been made)
Best of luck to it
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
Just noticed I didn't say anything about the second preview I saw (put it down to NY jet lag and dementure or or....? mmmm, yes, I forgot??)
Anyways....
This show is serious fun and by the firt wek in June wil be as tight as a nuns pantyhose! It is a true, big, up there, West End musical hit. It is near perfection. Menken's music is magic. Soooo many big production numbers.
To be honest having seen the show in its original format in LA when they first announced the Palladium i thought they were making a huge mistake. Now i've seen what they've done to the show, i think it has no issues filling the space. In my opinion it works better in there than the sound of music did.
