re: 'Sister Act- The Musical' -London Palladium

I sat there and i thought 'this is a very Palladium show' kinda like 'Barnum' and ?Singin In The Rain' etc.
Its a very big show and fits it perfectly.

re: 'Sister Act- The Musical' -London Palladium

I'm at the Palladium right now (it's intermission) and I just have to say - I totally underestimated this show. The score is fantastic - classic Menken (How I Got The Calling) plus some great motown style songs (Take Me To Heaven). The cast are phenomenal - highlights include Sheila Hancock, Claire Greenway, Katie Rowley Jones (who I assume will SHINE when she gets her big Act 2 solo), Julia Sutton and of course the divine Patina Miller. The best thing about this fantastic show however is the set. The revolve is insane - it's like Lord of the Rings+Priscilla+Shrek revolves but on steroids. Brian Thomson has HUGE competition for the Set Design Olivier. Plus the church sliders and the perspective -utter genius. I will definitely be back again very soon.

Will post full thoughts after.

PS: what's the fastest route from the Palladium to Victoria Station??
PPS: the Palladium balcony is literally a furnace

re: 'Sister Act- The Musical' -London Palladium

Seats were perfect - except for the temperature. I was wearing a t-shirt and jeans ... and I was nearly sweating. Have RUG never heard of air conditioning?

Didn't miss a thing, and wouldn't want to with such an incredible set. I loved the first scene change - from the club to the dressing room. The revolve + the elevator + the other revolve = theatrical heaven. I had the same gasp then as I did during the prologue of 9 to 5.

I recognised Julia Sutton, but that's also because I have heard the show a few times now and knew which part she was playing.

Carline Brouwer is now in the programme - credited directly above Anthony Van Laast. Thankfully they're acknowledging her :)

Loved the show curtain - did it have the angel when everyone else saw it?

Also did anyone else notice the huge silver angel hanging where the chandelier normally is? I hoped they would have a big overture discoball moment (ala the Priscilla overture) but it didn't happen.

Love the new songs - except "Here Within These Walls" and "Spread the Love Around". I much prefer "Simple Life" and "Mirror Ball", which were in the 07 LA production.

Patina is such a darling - at stage door I was the only person there not waiting for someone in the cast/crew and she was really gracious when I asked her for her autograph. Expect big things from her in the future!

Will post more thoughts tomorrow when I'm not falling asleep

I hope the critics love it. I haven't been so completely absorbed in a show for ages and it really deserves a decent run. Actually seeing the show of made me hate the artwork even more... it does absolutely no justice to the design or production value. I loved every minute of it.

Although regarding the temperature... I was freezing my d*ck off! I was there with a Danish friend and she was sat there in her coat. Believe me, she knows cold. I seem to remember I shivered my way through SOM as well, but that may just have been the onset of a breakdown.

If they have a show curtain, its new.
All they had the first week was a cheap and nasty pink curtain that was so light, when the doors were open in the auditorium it blew on to stage and set. It looked awful, i hope they have gotten rid.

The show curtain is now a deep papal purple that was gathered up in the hand of an angel. After Sheila's little bit at the start, the angel "let go" of the curtain and it fell away, revealing the nightclub set. Very cool reveal.

One annoying thing though, during preshow there was a black out curtain behind the purple cloth and during the mobile phone announcement (which was done by Whoopi) it flew up very fast, making the curtain ripple - annoying and totally distracting!!

The show curtain was purple when I went last week and yes they had the angel that descended where the chandiler should of been, advantage of being in the Upper Circle, you cannot help but notice.

I think everyone is anonymous how much of a great show this is, I never have seen this on here before, the critics are in for a treat!

That angel wasn't the same angel holding the curtain.

The silver angel curtain hanging where the chandelier would've been didn't move last night.

There was a different gold angel that held the curtain, then flew up rather awkwardly to its "hiding place" in full view for the whole show behind the first FOH LX truss. That make sense?

Saw this on Tuesday night and absolutely LOVED it.

Got to the box office at 4 in the afternoon and asked about student ticks/standbys etc, there were 5 of us, and we got 5 seats front row centre stalls for £25 each!!!! I was amazed there was still day seats left, let alone right in the centre!

Theatre was PACKED and the whole audience rose to their feet at the end. The atmosphere was just great and all the jokes and songs got great responses.

After the show we were interviewed by some people in the box office, saying how much we liked the show etc so will probs be on the internet videos when they go up.

Stage doored after the show and were taking pics outside the big sign and had a reli nice chat with some of the cast. Got my photo with Patina Miller, and god autographs off loads some of the others, they were all so nice and could tell they loved the show, they even recognised us from being in the front row, were well dancing along at the end.

This show should run and run and run, it is such a high quality. Wouldn't mind sitting abit further back next time to maybe take more in but front rowing at this show is definitely an experience you should have, such high energy.

LOVEDDD the songs! Fave ones were How I got the Calling, Take me to Heaven, Sister Act and Raise your Voice.

On re-listening, I noticed that the Sally Field nun joke completely flew over the British audiences heads, while in the LA production it got a huge laugh.

Was Flying Nun ever aired in the UK?

re: 'Sister Act- The Musical' -London Palladium

Well, saw this brand new show around 1 1/2 wks ago and all I can is... WOW! It's an AMAZING show!
I haven't seen the film in ages so I can't really exactly remember what it's about and the musical's storyline is quite solid! There are some changes here and there after I watched the film last night but it was fine, they were great changes!
The set was fine at first... I wasn't overly impressed at start but then near the end of Act 1 during the 'Take Me To Heaven Reprise' scene, that set was AMAZING. The lighting & costumes were both great.
The music... it's Alan Menken! how can it go wrong?! it's every part as enjoyable and fun as any other works that we're familiar with! Quite a few catchy tunes like 'Raise Your Voice' and 'Take Me To Heaven' and 'Fabulous Baby!' (all sung by Deloris) and some really touching & haunting tunes sung like 'Here Within These Walls' (sung by Mother Superior) and 'The Life I Never Led' (sung by Mary Robert)
Now now now, the cast! The cast's the GEM of the show! truly! Patina Miller BLEWWWWWWWWWWWW me away! She makes those high notes & riffs sound sooo super ultra easy and she can just go higher n higher n higher! her portrayal was different to Whoopi's but it was sexy and sassy! It's guaranteed she'll be nominated for awards and actually win quite a few as well!
The supporting cast like Sheila Hancock as Mother Superior, so subtle and humorous! Julia Sutton as Mary Lazarus stole the show for me! Claire Greenway as Mary Patrick as well! Both of them were sooo hilarious! Some hilarious scenes from the gangsters and also Eddie were all great too.
I can rave about this show all night... it was every second of it super fun! go watch it if you can!

I really enjoyed the show, so I drew one of my caricatures of the amazing Patina... tell me what you guys think! hope to give it to her next week!

re: 'Sister Act- The Musical' -London Palladium

Can someone with a program list the understudies?
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
