It's one of my favorite shows on Broadway. Sure, there are some flaws structurally, but since when did some poor technical decisions automatically make for a bad night of theatre? The performances and inspiration more than make up for the flaws.....
I absolutely loved the show. I saw it with the original cast and it is beyond me how anyone can leave the theater not feeling on top of the world.
LaChanze's beautiful voice touched me, the story moved me and I also laughed a ton.
I forced my mother to go see the Chicago cast and she could not understand why I was so adamant that she see it. I got a call as soon as she got out of it, basically saying thank you and that she understood now.
I liked The Color Purple. I saw it at the Alliance in Atlanta, so I can't really comment on Bway, but I did see LaChanze. She was amazing. I will see it on tour next year, I'm hoping it's even better. I thought the Opening to act 2 would have been cut at least a little. The OBCR just dosen't do much for me.

I actually loved the show; I saw it twice with the original cast. And I LOVE LaChanze. Its one of the very few shows I actually cried at, even though I knew what was going to happen (I had already seen the film version...AND I cried again the second time I saw the show, lol) I think it was because the performances were so incredibly powerful, especially LaChanze's. My heart just broke for her.
I love the cast recording and finally got to see the show last weekend when I went to Chicago. I wasn't disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed it! I find many of the songs very moving and there are moments I get choked up every time. I think it is a show where you have to be in a certain mood to really get absorbed in it, but I would go and see it again!
I will say that as a African American who had been following the show since it's start in Atlanta..that at first I did not like the show at all. If truth be told if Oprah hadn't have been there for this show..it would have flopped hardcore. Even Alice Walker in the beginning was alittle iffy about the show. When the cast recording came out ...I got it and I didn't even listen to it that much..but as time wore on it became one of my favorites and stays in heavy rotation in my CD player.
I don't think it's a BLACK or WHITE thing at all...just because I'm black doesn't mean I like every Black musical that comes to Broadway.
