...For showing up to an awards show completely under-dressed?
Off the top of my head, I can't think of anyone this year close to the level of Frances' Old Navy sun dress with the jeans jacket.
Amanda Seyfried. Even though she didn't wear a jean jacket she still looked like she was dressed by a group of blind whores.
Amanda Seyfried is usually dressed great and looks beautiful. At the Tonys she was looked so blah and the dress didn't show off her ample assets at all.
Candice Bergen gets my vote.
Philip Seymour Hoffman was wearing a suit, but when they showed him as a nominee, he looked like he just woke up -- his tie was pulled down and his top shirt button was unbuttoned. Other people may not have been flatteringly dressed, but he wins the "Frances McDormand I'm-Going-To-Show-You-I-Don't-Care Award" in my mind.
Except, judging by his expression when James Corden's name was called, he actually cared very, very much.
Candice Bergen. Oy.
Take Barkin's head put it on Seyfried's body. Shoes by Mrs. Jackman. Phillip Seymour's disposition and then you have the ultimate Tonys Frankenfashion monster.

Submitted for your consideration, Linda Emond:
Marketa Irglova was wearing those awful toe sneakers. http://www.aceshowbiz.com/events/Marketa%20Irglova/marketa-irglova-66th-annual-tony-awards-02.html
Marketa looks terrible, but at least she hadn't been nominated for an award!
Philip Seymour Hoffman always looks like he just woke up.
There's a scene in which he gets a haircut in Ides of March... and his hair literally does not change.
Oh good GOD! Linda! Not a peplum!!!
In all fairness to McDormand, the jacket at least was a nod to the role and the play. The rest of it? No idea.

there is no fairness to be accorded mcdormand for that abomination.
whatsoever.
if nominees were meant to appear at awards shows dressed in character, nina arianda would have been wearing a dog collar and leather bustier.
yet somehow she knew better ... explain to me why frances found it so hard???
I had forgotten the horror of that ensemble until I saw this thread.
Candice Bergen's choice was unfortunate.
And I have a pair of the toe shoes similar to the ones Marketa Irglova was wearing and while they are beyond comfortable, they were an atrocious choice.
I was also not fond of Jessica Chastain's dress.

McDomand does not have to show up in the latest high fashion expensive couture gown or be anything she's not. To me her look can only be explained by drugs or a SERIOUS "I'll show those fascist pigs that I don't care...while I show up and say thank you for this award."
She literally makes no sense with an outfit like that. I wouldnt care if she wore a JC Penny's mother of the bride dress as long as it looked like she made a minute effort to look presentable. Look at my favorite actress, Jan Maxwell this year. She didn't have great hair and the dress was just alright, but she looked like she wanted to be there and was respectful of the awards/American Theatre Wing.
Good point about the respect issue. Not everyone cares that much about clothes nor do they want to bother with a stylist. But there is something to be said about at least making an effort to look presentable.
There are people who would sell an organ to be in McDormand's place and for her to show up looking like she did can easily be interpreted as a total lack of respect for the entire process. And that is something I am not cool with in any situation.
I loved what Frances McDormand wore last year, and I think she was just being herself. As for Linda Emond, I think she looks fantastic! Maybe not the best choice for an awards show, but who cares? Loved them both.

Like this?
Well I'm scarred for life now.
