Rewatched some youtube clips, and Kristen's acting is simply phenomenal and really defined who that character was. Don't think anyone has done it better.
Love Idina, but honestly Kristen deserved that leading actress Tony. I think with the "Defying Gravity" song and Kristen winning the Tony was the reason she won.

Who is Kristen?
And when did I get in a time machine?

Posted: 6/25/14 at 8:35pmThe role was bulked up so that they could get Kristin to do the show. The starring role is really Elphaba and G(a)linda should really be in the supporting category.

Posted: 6/25/14 at 9:05pmJordan Catalano, I just clicked on this post to say that same thing. Tonya Pinkins should have won, the category was an embarrassment of riches, but what Pinkins did with Caroline Thibodeaux should have earned her every award. I get why Idina Menzel won, and I'm usually fine with the nature of awards, but boy does this one bother me.

"Tonya Pinkins should have won, the category was an embarrassment of riches, but what Pinkins did with Caroline Thibodeaux should have earned her every award."
Sometimes it's difficult for people to separate the performance from the material. Tonya Pinkins was working her butt off, but the material was heavy lifting. That's why we still have Wicked running and Caroline closed.

Posted: 6/25/14 at 11:06pmCaroline, or Change is quite possibly the epitome of Musical Theatre at it's height of perfection. A gorgeous, breathtaking score - and each song is absolutely necessary to the story. A tear-jerking plot, and plenty of great roles. Miss Pinkins really did carry the show - but not in a way that the show would not work without her. I have seen community productions that still move me to tear without her. I think it did exactly what it wanted to do and succeeded in that way artistically. In the 2004 season it should have won both best musical and best leading female - but unfortunately Broadway was more focused on the glitz and glamor of Wicked - and not the heart and soul of Caroline.

First of all, I agree that Caroline or Change is a damn near perfect musical, and Tonya Pinkins was unreal.
I also think that in art, awarding the "best" anything can be absurd at times, particularly in a season so rich with great performances by leading ladies, as the 2004 season was. I'm not sure any of the women nominated were BETTER than the others, to me they all breathed unique life into their respective roles, and all were worth celebrating.
But with award shows, votes tend to go in the direction of the cultural moment and a bigger picture. Idina's performance and her role had (and still have) a life that is bigger than the show itself and bigger than just being impressive or expertly executed. It really was an event. It doesn't mean she was really better than the others, but she was lucky enough to be part of building a role that had a certain effect on people, and for that I think yeah...she deserved to win.
What does "best" really mean anyway?

I kind of agree but I think they both deserved it in their own kind of way. It just came down to a popularity contest in the end
Have you seen Kara Lindsay as Galinda. I thought that was phenomenal. She brought a new magic to the show. She was great in Newsies too.

Yes, and that evening so changed both of their lives. Such a shame that Cheno never recovered.
That year was no different then any other (excepting the amount of wonderful, deserving nominees)

Someone had to open this Pandora's Box?
I'm specifically talking Avenue Q winning over Wicked.

Is this about the rumors that Kristin hates Idina because Idina beat her for a Tony?

Posted: 6/26/14 at 11:41amIt was a fantastic crop of nominees. I'm also on the Tonya Pinkins should have won train, but I'm throwing out support for Stephanie D'Abruzzo in Avenue Q. She broke my heart while playing through a puppet and doing the heavy emotional lifting in that show. She made it look effortless, too.

So...why does the thread title have/need this unnecessary adverb "so"?
It is such a cliche here on the board.
