I have to say that I am currently obsessed with the "Women On The Verge" cast recording and I feel the need to apologize for all the bitchiness and negativity I contributed to during its run. I think I was the harshest to ljay (edited), so my humble apologies dear ljay. :)
The score is beautiful and the lyrics are incredible. I will still say I'm not certain how they necessarily move the story along, but they are brilliant songs.
I feel like I somehow contributed to the negativity of a show that was never given a chance. I hope to be nicer from now on.
WOTV goes onto my list of favorite cast recordings and is one of my go-to cast recordings that I will listen to from beginning to end.
:-O
I think I was the harshest to adamgreer, so my humble apologies dear adam.
Hehe, I think you mean me.
Was it you ljay? I think I was a total bitch to both of you. I apologize to you as well ljay-you really didn't deserve what I was putting out. xo
It's ok. <3 Apology accepted.
Adamgreer is one of my best friends. He didn't hate or love the show, so you may be thinking of someone else.
I'm a big fan of the cast recording too! The show closed before I got a chance to see it, but I love the audio and video recordings out there, and they have definitely helped me get over some of my disappointment about not being able to the show live. I know it was rough during the early previews, but I think the finished product is a great show with a stunning score
The cast recording is wonderful. The doesn't mean you were wrong in your perception of the effectiveness of the production. Lots of shows work better on disc than they do live.
No it must be you alone then. I know you are friends, so maybe I just got confused. Sorry ljay.
I havent taken the CD out of my player in weeks.
I am just so glad the score was recognized with a Tony nomination. David Yazbek is such a great composer.
Well I remembered not liking any of the score when I saw the show. I couldn't really make out the lyrics other than 'Model Behavior". I'd like to see a regional production with less technology to worry about and more focus on the characters and songs.
For some reason I thought this would be about Dance of the Vampires.
Yeah that definitely wasn't me!
I enjoyed the score to Verge a great deal, with the exception of that awful Microphone song that Stokes had to sing. He did his best, but it was awful.
I was ambivalent about the show itself, but never thought it deserved all of the venom it received here.
It's an amazing score. It feels like a score that Yazbek had been dying to write for years.
I think Lovesick and Invisible are my favortie songs out of last season's bumper crop of original scores.

Even Madrid, a song that first struck me as crass and workmanlike, has really grown on me over time. It's an amazing recording.
I just wish they recorded a bit more dialogue, and cutting Patti's intro to 'On the Verge' is criminal.
Wonderful recording, though!
All of Sherie's songs are so beautiful and I HATED her in that show. Lovesick and Island are so well-crafted. Personally, Tangled Up is a gem too.
I was very put off seeing the show in person, but I do remember seeing Patti do "Invisible" and knowing I was witnessing something very special. Listen to it all the time.
I actually like the microphone song, though it did stop the show cold (not in a good way).
LOVE "Invisible." There are a couple of decent videos of it on the 'Tube.
I really like all the tracks. "Microphone" is a charming song, it just stopped the show cold, but I like hearing Mr. Stokes-Mitchell croon.
I also love "Time Stood Still" and I like Patti's moments at the end of the song where she starts wailing. It kicks a#@.
Mary Beth Peil has such a lovely voice. She's new to me-any other recordings of hers that people would recommend?
She's on the NINE revival recording, but only has one song.
And she'll be singing "Ah, Paris" on the upcoming FOLLIES revival recording.
I still think it's crap.
The Microphone as a stand alone song is fine, but it was so random in the show, and as others said, stopped the show cold for all the wrong reasons. It did nothing to further the plot, and was clearly only written because Stokes wanted a song in each act (and I'm sure the audience would have been disappointed if he didn't get to sing in each act, so I understand why they did it...I just wish the song had more to do with the action onstage).

So, adamgreer, you know for a fact "The Microphone" was written due to Mitchell's request/demand as opposed to the creators' attempt to create a role an actor of a certain stature would want to play?
I actually don't believe Stokes did either workshop of the musical. So unless it was written after the workshops, the song had already existed.
I also love "Time Stood Still" and I like Patti's moments at the end of the song where she starts wailing. It kicks a#@.
That's actually my favorite song on the CD and those moments are why I thought she was giving the best performance in the show.
I get that "Microphone" is a song about Ivan being a player and its full of double entendres. I feel like WOTV is more like "Chicago" . Basically, characters come out and sing a song that informs you about them, not really pushing the narrative along.
I think the book had problems in identifying a protagonist and it got a little muddy in the storytelling.
