Here's what Salon.com said (and I soooo agree):

If you don't see it with your own eyes, you won't believe it. CBS's new musical dramedy "Viva Laughlin" is so bad, it defies description. If the actors broke into song occasionally, replete with great choreography, that would be one thing. Instead, the actors sing along to original recordings, which only remind us of being trapped at a party when someone with an inflated sense of his own talent dons a lampshade and steps up onto the coffee table. Even the big numbers are sloppily choreographed and full of enough rapid cuts to induce seizures. And as unusual as it may be to see Melanie Griffith singing "One Way or Another" or Hugh Jackman singing "Sympathy for the Devil," the second the novelty wears off, a little shiver of dread sets in. What in the world were they thinking?

*cries* I'd planned on watching this. I love Hugh Jackman.

Actually, there were two episodes aired which is one of the reasons the show was canceled, there was a significant drop of viewers from the premiere to the second episode (a drop from numbers that were already less-than-stellar, the reviews that called it the worst show in the history of TV didn't help either).

The sad thing is that the story sounded like a great one had it NOT been a musical. It could have worked by chance~~
"Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion's starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don't see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often it's not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it's always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I've got a sneaky feeling you'll find that love actually is all around."

Wow... cancelled after only 2 shows!! Even that musical theatre/cop drama of 1990... "Cop Rock" lasted 11 episodes (from September 26, 1990 to December 26, 1990). Here is a link... from RC in Austin, Texas

Cop Rock
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

Plus it was on opposite the seventh and deciding game of the American League Championship Series, which is why probably there's a rerun airing on Sunday of another show in it's place, because the World Series is on. Too bad, since the third show did feature Hugh - Nicky with a beard! (Because when he taped that episode in July he was still filming AUSTRALIA - and he still is.)

Hugh isn't free until at least April - he's still filming AUSTRALIA and then right after that he goes into X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE.

I watched about ten minutes worth of this show and that is all i could stand. What exactly was the point of having anyone sing if they were singing along with the original recording? I just didn't get it. I didn't doubt that we would never see an episode two.

Seven (7) episodes were filmed, with CBS having the option to cancel the series or renew it for a full season, which would have given the series a total of 22 episodes.

The unaired episodes could most likely be released on a COMPLETE SERIES DVD or just locked away forever.

This show looked and sounded terrible from the original summary description. Shades of COP ROCK. What the heck CBS was thinking is beyond me. They often keep shows on that don't deserve it and cancel shows that don't deserve to be cancelled. This one should never have made it to the air.

CBS was thinking they could bank off the success of the original BBC series, Viva Blackpool. They were just clueless as to how to do so. I didn't like Viva Blackpool, so I didn't bother to watch Viva Laughlin.

Blackpool was ace, the comedy was great and they knew how to handle the story and music

Yet again, America remade one of our great UK shows and some how managed to get it soooooo wrong (i did think Lauglin was funny to watch though)

They shot 9 episodes of the show and they WONT be released (they were an interview on sky news what said they would never see the light of date)

Shame i dont know why they just dont put them on their site and charge like $5 to watch them, instead of binning them, at least they would make some money back that they have wasted.

Grr dont get me started on the whole Pilot thing
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna

All these posts and no one mentions the presence of Broadway's Anna Kendrick in two of the VL episodes? ("Holly" in what most posters are calling episode 2-- the last episode aired-- which was actually the first episode after the "pilot." She's also in what would've been the next episode aired, which we may or may not someday have access to.)

Wonder what her role would've turned into beyond the brief "Hello" and wiggle of her butt that viewers did get to see.

They are also apparently considering airing them on one of the cable networks CBS owns. Hugh's filming a movie, but his wife made comments when she was asked about it:

Deb and Hugh gutted over Viva

HAVING the axe fall on their musical drama Viva Laughlin hasn't deterred Deborra-Lee Furness and husband Hugh Jackman from continuing to develop projects through their production company Seed.

A philosophical Furness braved the media yesterday as a presenter at the 2007 Australian Film Institute Award nominations announcements, just 24 hours after the Nine Network dumped the television series after one episode.

The actress admitted the show's storyline was a "huge risk" - but one they were willing to take for their first TV production.

"I can't explain how disappointed we are and obviously upset," Furness said.

"This is showbiz, if you don't take any risks . . . the fact we got cancelled after two shows - it happens fast, you have to just move on to the next one.

"We are looking at scripts and still developing."

Furness said CBS, the US network which axed the series after two episodes, had told Seed none of their shows was striking a chord with viewers and most had been panned by critics.

But an upbeat Furness said that, given the chance, she felt Viva Laughlin could have built an audience base, especially in Australia.

"This is out of the box. This is a drama and they are singing along and I think that takes a while to get used to . . . obviously (I) wish we had more time to show it off," she said.

"But hey, if I am going to fail I am going to fail spectacularly - and it seems we did!"

First of all, I didn't know there was anything musical about this. It wasn't very clear in the ads. Now, it makes sense why they were advertising this on the Tonys. However, those same ads on the awards made me so annoyed that I refused to look further into the show. Maybe if they hadn't shoved it down people's throat people would've been more interested.
So, that was the Drowsy Chaperone. Oh, I love it so much. I know it's not a perfect show...but it does what a musical is supposed to do. It takes you to another world, and it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for when you're feeling blue. Ya know?
