So, I saw Rock of Ages...

and I didn't walk out. I didn't even hate it. But I'd never pay to see it. Got a free ticket to the matinee today. It was enjoyable, to a extent. Amy Spanger is, as always, giving a great performance (and as seems to be happening to her lately, in a substantially inferior show).

I understand the rock concert style, but the sound is a little over done in places and i just couldn't understand portions of the dialogue.

It has no business being nominated for best musical, and constantine's nomination is kind of a joke. Also not sure how the director got nominated. But I fully stand behind the nomination for costumes, they were outstanding.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

Reasoning for nomination is easy - it's this year's XANADU. Crowd-pleasing, self-deprecating, completes the mission it sets out to do. That and they really hated 9 to 5.

Why don't you think it has 'any business' being nominated?

By the way - since you didn't hate it, welcome to being part of the dregs of the Earth!

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

I have a friend on here who saw it and loved it because it was mindless and you didn't need to think. He said it was just fun!

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

Its far from good, that's why it has no business being nominated.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

It should be nominated....
it is a fun loud show.
Constantine is great.
I really dont like amy
Kelli was much better in the role, she seemed more innocent

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

I guess the nominators thought differently!

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

I love how serious some of the fans take this show. They treat it as it is more deserving than next to normal or something
I'm a professional. Whenever something goes wrong on stage, I know how to handle it so no one ever remembers. I flash my %#$&. "Jayne just sat there while Gina flailed around the stage like an idiot."

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

Some of the singing was excellent but the book is wretched. Nowhere near as witty or funny as Douglas Carter Beane's for XANADU. Not even close.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

No way is it this year's Xanadu. Xanadu had a very well crafted, heartfelt and often hysterical book. Rock of Ages has one of the weakest books of the past few seasons.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

To each their own. I'm sure there are people who think that ROCK OF AGES is just as "well crafted, heartfelt and often hysterical."

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

With all of these comparisons to Xanadu, I've got to say that a friend and I saw that show, expecting to love it, but we never laughed once. I can't say I liked it at all.

So, yes, each to his own. This is what makes the world go 'round.

.....It shouldn't be nominated.

It was nominated.
I guess the people who decide thought it was good.....better then good.

& I agree.

Just because you don't like something, it's not your style or your taste- doesn't mean it's bad.

Constantine is a talented actor & he sings beautifully.
What do the other nominees have that he doesn't????

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

I can seperate my opinion and be objective. I'm not a huge fan of Follies, but I know its good. It doesn't really work for me, but i recognize the skill in the writing.

Rock of Ages on the other hand is just bad. I can see why people enjoy it, but it is not good.

Hell I LOVE SHOWGIRLS but it was not a good movie. The same goes for In My Life, i adored IML, but it was a ****storm.

"Rock of Ages on the other hand is just bad"

keep in mind this is just your opinion, and not a fact, as you state it.

And, for the sake of nominations, the people who count don't agree with you.

wow, you haters just can't let it go. Not only you, Zoneace. The haters are so intense about this. Geez, it's only a show, get over it.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

the same could be said about you obsessers. You won't let anyone not like it, you come along and tell them they're tight asses and don't know how to have fun.

funny how that door swings both ways isn't it.

of course, you won't acknowledge it, but thats ok, crazy people rarely realize they are.

"Rock of Ages on the other hand is just bad. I can see why people enjoy it, but it is not good."

If people are enjoying it, and they seem to be acccording to you, isn't that kinda the point of entertainment in general? I also think if they are bringing in an audience ($$$$) it is good for Broadway. Not everyone has to like it, but some do, including a good enough percentage of the nominating committee to nominate it. Hopefully for the sanity of this board, the voting committee did not enjoy it.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

tehy weren't bringing in an audience today, there were a LARGE number of comps.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

>>>weren't bringing in an audience today

It was an added show on a day they are usually dark.

>>>You won't let anyone not like it

I don't care if you like it-

What I have objected to has been the name calling of anyone who does like it.

no you objected to me saying it shouldn't be nominated, but you know, if you want to lie and make up ****, go ahead. it fits with the obsessive personality exhibited by ROA "fans"

It was nominated- You didn't say "I don't think it should be" you said "It shouldn't be"
You can have your opinion-
My point was- you don't get to decide.

re: So, I saw Rock of Ages...

Ugg, another weak argument about ROA. Pretty obvious based on his past comments before he saw it, that zone went in to the show with a stick firmly planted up his rear, and his nose in the air. Of course he wasn't going to like it. Then he'd have to admit he was wrong. Not the strong suit of many people on here. But let it go, ROA fans.

Audiences love it. Most critics liked or loved it. The TONY nominators liked it enough to nominate (ie more than 9 to 5). Some people think it's beneath them - but go ahead and "lower" themselves to discuss it - even when they haven't seen it. At least you attended the show - not sure if you actually saw it yet though.

How can you tell when there are a ton of comps, by the way?
