I caught the matinee yesterday. I'd previously seen a regional production where I came away liking the play but feeling it hadn't been well served. I'm so happy this revival fires on all cylinders. Whitney White's direction is impeccable, and Qween Jean should clear another spot on her mantle for her next Tony. Cody Spencer's sound design is superb and is a lesson in how to amplify a play without making the speech sound distorted. What a cast! Onyi Aba was on for Nana and was excellent. Denée Benton (playing fabulously against type) and Patina Miller should be remembered come awards season. And Jasmine Amy Rogers proves again that she's one of the most versatile young performers in New York. It's so exciting to have the season's first must-see production come so soon.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
