Soul Doctor going into Circle In The Square?

At least three people have told me that "they have heard" that Soul Doctor is going into Circle In The Square and starting previews in July. Is this the same show that played at NYTW last summer? It was ok but I'm not sure it will work on Broadway. I know there were rumors that it was coming to Broadway last fall but it never happened. If they're going to start previews in July shouldn't tickets already be on sale? Anybody else hearing this? I guess that means that Here Lies Love wont be moving to CITS like so many have predicted.

Weren't they struggling for $$$ not too long ago? I see to remember a kerfuffle over them spamming here for funds and the thread going bit nuts. (I could be totally making this up, too.)
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The audition chatter is that they are supposedly starting rehearsals the beginning of June but they still haven't finished casting the show. That would be consistent with a July opening rumor.

If they were opening in July, they'd already be behind with announcements and press.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

I didn't become aware of SOUL DOCTOR until the recent Drama Desk awards. I agree with most folks here. If this show is to open at Circle in the Square in July, chances are it would be well confirmed and the marketing machine would have kicked in. If there's more wishful thinking than solid going on it could well be on the part of the Circle in the Square which desperately needs a booking. As much as SOUL DOCTOR sounds interesting to me, opening in July would not likely serve them well, as it would be an intimate "boutique" musical trying to get noticed by summer tourists, up against MOTOWN, KINKY BOOTS, ANNIE, MATILDA and other big shows. If it comes to Broadway at all, I hope the timing is more conducive to possible success.

I'm sure Circle in the Square would be more than happy to host SOUL DOCTOR or HERE LIES LOVE, whenever and if ever they decide to move midtown.

For what it's worth, souldoctoronbroadway.com is undergoing maintenance at the moment. It's a blank page with the cgi-bin category and nothing else. That tell me they want to get to Broadway soon if they're actively working on the website. I doubt it'll open in July but fall is a definite possibility.

This is in addition to souldoctorbroadway.com that says the show is Broadway-bound. A lot of musicals put that on their websites. Buying the "onbroadway" domain suggests a deal is in the works.

I feel this theater is more cursed that the Marquis in terms of flops. Outside of "Spelling Bee", what was the last hit show to play the Circle??
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

It is indeed a very tough space for which to find a suitable production. I imagine many directors would rather avoid working in it. Given the option, I doubt it would be built today. I felt they got lucky with THE NORMAL CONQUESTS and reasonably lucky (not financially) with LOMBARDI. Even though GODSPELL was a critical failure, it had a decent run, despite the critics. A run like SPELLING BEE is beyond rare, especially for that venue. For very different reasons the Beaumont was long thought of as a problematic house as well.

The cancellation of PUMP BOYS AND DINETTES just makes the dark period seem so much longer than usual.

Ironically, many shows I saw there in the 1970s and 80s worked well in the space, such as TARTUFFE and LOOSE ENDS. It's a delicate marriage.

Thanks a lot for the link to the Time article. Wow, that was from last summer. We've been through an entire season cycle and an open Circle in the Square, and nothing's happened -- not even New World Stages. I'd say at this point, everyone (theater owners and operators and producers) have passed on the idea of mounting the show again in midtown.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

The audition postings were fairly recent and I know people are going through callbacks now. So I don't think it's totally off the table.
