Not only did Krakowski get a nomination but she won for her performance as Miss Adelaide. Menzel won a Tony over performances that were much more raved about (and in my opinion worthier of the award, i.e Donna Murphy, Tonya Pinkins, Kristin Chenoweth--Brantley's review of Wicked barely mentioned Menzel at all). There's no need to rationalize the fact that British voters did not think her performance was worthy of a nomination, especially in a year with such strong female roles as Caroline, Evita, et al.
"Some people can thrive and bloom living life in a living room, that's perfect for some people of one hundred and five. But I at least gotta try, when I think of all the sights that I gotta see, all the places I gotta play, all the things that I gotta be at"
For those not familiar with the Olivier nomination process, I thought I'd jump in with a little bit about how it works.
The "panel" is made up of 9 (I think), which composes both "professionals" and members of the public. The 9 pannelists come up with a long list of nominations.
The long list is then circulated to members of SOLT (primarily producers and theatre owners), who vote to create the short list we've seen today.
This means that Idina/Wicked may have been "snubbed" by the panellists, or may have been loved by the panellists and snubbed by the SOLT members. We'll never know.
The panel will vote for the eventual winners.
In any case, any comments about how the critics reacted to a production, or how the audiences react, or even what other awards are given (Evening Standard, Tony, etc.) ultimately have only a little bearing as it's now up to those 9 people (non-critics) to decide, and they are not likely to be influenced hugely by all these other factors.
And as the members of the public are changed every year, past voting is not necessarily indicative of how they will vote this year.
So we'll all have to wait in suspense to see the outcome!
Thanks for that info. Interesting that the nominating committee only has nine members (the Tony nominating committee has 25 or so theatre professionals from various disciplines).

"Nathan Lane won the Olivier two years ago for THE PRODUCERS after doing only a few months in the role (and the show is STILL running)"
THE PRODUCERS closed about three weeks ago!
Someone said they refused to believe there had been 5 higher calibre performances from an actress than Menzel's this year. Well, it's true. All 5 women gave better acted performances.
I'm not going to get into the Idina argument, but I will say that I think Elphaba is a much harder role than Lady of the Lake. And I do also think that Lady of the Lake is a supporting role.
Will they be televised and if so will there be musical numbers? I know in the past some years they've been televised with Tony style clips (just do a search for Olivier Awards on that bad site we can't mention) but not often...
